Fun idea, where intrigue rules
Revisado: 05-16-21
Naturally when I pursue high fantasy or even science fiction books, action comes to the fore. Yet Elantris is one of the only books I have read that has gotten intrigue just right. A beautiful balance of court intrigue without a reliance on heavy action scenes. Was refreshing. On all counts.

They’ve made allies on the darker side of many pantheons, and there’s a globe-spanning battle brewing that ancient Druid Atticus O’Sullivan will be hardpressed to survive, much less win.

The Character That Ruined It All...
Revisado: 08-13-20
Let me start by saying that I adored the bulk of this series. I devoured it. I loved it. I have only recently come to the Iron Druid Chronicles and I inhaled the entire body of work over the course of about a month. And largely I enjoyed this one. Aside from the overly preachy Granuaile chapters that always seem to drift into needless observations to make the reader feel bad and "thoughtful" which I don't think anyone enjoyed. But for the bulk of Atticus and Owen's tales it was fine. Until the end. A horrible and needless ending that was unsatisfactory in the action, the last battle and the victor. Further awful deeds stacked at the conclusion of the battle and ending only made it worse and cemented Granuaile as one of the most terrible characters ever written, in the very least, she turns out to be horribly selfish and unaware of what other people did for her and gave her. Which honestly is pretty hypocritical when you consider the drivel she blathered on about each and every chapter. In summary. I loved this series and shall think on Atticus, Owen and the hounds fondly. I did not care for the ending. And I hated Granuwaile, she raises my blood pressure and is bad for my health.

Historia
Beautiful and self-confident businesswoman Rusty Carlson was hurt, terrified and alone with a man she feared. But one thing was certain – she would surely die without his help. Vietnam vet Cooper Landry had a deep-rooted grudge against beautiful women like Rusty. Experience had taught him they were takers. But he’d survived far worse dangers, and this time he’d be damned if he’d let her risk his chance for survival.

Bubblegum voices just aren't my thing.
Revisado: 01-07-15
I truly disliked this book. Truly. I wanted to like it but the voice used for the female lead drove me crazy. The plot itself was good but I couldn't help twitching at some of the gender role stuff. That might be a problem with the date the book was originally written, though. I can swallow that difference, I just can't handle hours of Ms. Bubblegum in my ear.

Loved this Book
Revisado: 09-29-14
I loved this book. It was interesting, took me to distant places, and kept me guessing. I had no idea who the culprit was until the ending, which was very, very nice. I hate coming to the end and already knowing what I'll find.
Awesome book. Well performed and well paced.

Historia
Maddie Faraday's life would be perfect if it weren't for her cheating husband, her suspicious daughter, her gossipy mother, her secretive best friend, her nosy neighbors, and that guy she lost her virginity to 20 years ago.
In Tell Me Lies, Jennifer Crusie dishes up a funny, sexy, suspenseful novel about small-town secrets, big-time betrayals and the redemptive power of love, laughter and chocolate brownies.

Light, Fun Read
Revisado: 09-29-14
I always enjoy Crusie's work. She has a way of making me laugh. I admit that in the middle of the book it didn't seem like her normal work or "style" but after a little research I found that this seems to be an earlier book. Still, it was fun to read and easy to listen to.
My hats off to Ms. Crusie for her talent.

Good Performance, Interesting Premise
Revisado: 09-29-14
I enjoyed this book straight up until the end. I was so excited to see how they dealt with all of the goings on in the house (Spoiler: it's haunted) and then they sort of just ... didn't. Maybe the author was trying to say that their love was able to conquer the unrest in the house but that just didn't quite cut it for me. There was no real struggle at the end.
The performance was great. I loved both voice actors. I just wish the ending had a little more to it is all.

Just Plain Fun
Revisado: 12-04-13
I realized today as I listened to this book why I enjoy Crusie so much. The truth is that I connect with her characters far easier and far deeper than with any other romance novelist. Which is probably why she's pretty much the only romance novelist I read. (Gabaldon doesn't count, her books are way too big to be considered pure romance.)
Anyway, I connected immediately with the main character, who was complicated, professional, had a sense of humor and generally approached life with the "I can handle this" attitude that I think most women have. And the love story grew in a natural way instead of being dictated by tons of raging hormones, which was nice.

I tried so hard to like it.
Revisado: 09-14-13
Honestly, I tried very, very hard to enjoy this book. I love reading Chronicles of Narnia to my kid so I thought maybe I'd give a stab at this one, but when push came to shove I just hated the way it was written. The language was bulky and hard to follow. The characters were only given to me on the surface and I barely knew what any one of them was thinking.
So, three stars.
I'll just go back to Narnia with my son and enjoy Lewis that way.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Good Science Fiction
Revisado: 09-14-13
I bought this book because I enjoyed Red Shirts and thought it might be as good. Now, it is good, but not in the same way. Red Shirts was definitely funny -- I laughed so hard my coworkers were worried about me -- and this one had its funny moments, but for the most part this book was just plain good science fiction.
I did think it was kind of a cheat that no one could explain how all the space travel really worked. Everyone kept saying "I just don't have the math" when it came down to trying to dig into the "skip drives" but I suppose sometimes an author has to cheat. The book wasn't about "skip drives" after all, but about soldiers.
And I do love stories about soldiers.
So, I enjoyed this book. It wasn't as "laugh out loud" funny as Red Shirts was, but it was definitely entertaining.

When 15-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing, not even a smear of blood, to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

Fun story with a weird twist
Revisado: 03-29-13
I was waiting for Clockwork Princess to be available, so I decided to try Clare's other works. I knew it was a modernized telling of pretty much the same sort of story, with the same urban magic system going on. However, I have to admit I prefer the Infernal Devices series over The Mortal Instruments.
That said, this was a good book, even if she did take me down a weird road at the end. I don't like spoilers, so I won't go telling exactly what this twist was, but as a sister I have to say .... ack! Clary's reaction to this revelation wasn't great, either. There should have been more going on in regards to that.
