Great Storytelling!
Revisado: 12-18-24
I was really captivated and was so disappointed when the story came to an end. i really wanted to hear more. I wonder if the story was ever turned into a novel/historical novel. the voice actors were great and part of what kept me going. really recommend it

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Revisado: 12-18-24
it just didn't do it for me. the narrator seemed too monotone for me, though that may have been the intent. I actually abandoned the book at some point so I'm not sure what the ending was but I honestly didn't have the patience to wait around and find out.

social Justice?
Revisado: 12-18-24
I was living in the Chicago suburbs during this period and recall hearing news articles frequently about Cabrini Green. until this podcast though, I had no idea how large it was. I do remember when former mayor Jane Byrne moved into Cabrini Green to try and improve its reputation. still wondering how that works because I left Illinois shortly after that and lost interest.
hearing this account of a man who was a victim rather than the creator of the victim was heart-wrenching. it was educational yet captivating at the same time as I was hoping that this gentleman would indeed receive parole. the only frustrating issue was that I had to wait until the very end to hear the outcome and while I was tempted to jump ahead and find out or look it up and find out I opted for the author to tell the story.

Revisado: 05-24-23
overall, I enjoyed this book and the performance except when I came to the cousin. I also had a problem with the dynamic between Bobbie and her cousin. he was made out to seem like a stereotypical country bumpkin and it felt out of place with the other characters - I can't tell if that's because of the performance or the way it's written.
I will certainly read more in the series if he cousin isn't in them.

Loved it!
Revisado: 03-28-23
absolutely hysterical. I feel like it is more appreciated by baby boomers who will appreciate some of the historical references and overall humor. I'm sure "Dick" Nixon, Pat, and Rosemary are all turning over in their graves!
One reference that may leave some in hysterics but may not know that it really happened is that LBJ absolutely hated tight trousers and actually called the head of Hagar and asked for specially made pants that weren't too tight in the crotch. I actually heard the recording on something like NPR or some other odd radio broadcast

not thrilled
Revisado: 01-22-22
it reminds me of a podcast called The White Vault, which is basically found audio. there is an element of the supernatural in the podcast and this performance leads the listener to believe that there may be some element of that here as well.
I was very disappointed in the character development and felt left hanging at the very end. I would like to have gotten some closure from the outside world as to what was actually going on and what was found at the base when help arrived. kind of feel like I wasted time listening.

hard first chapters
Revisado: 10-08-21
I almost abandoned after a really boring first two chapters which I have no clue what they were about. it didn't really get interesting until the couple arrived in Scotland. after that I really enjoyed the story and did get involved with some of the characters.
the narrator did a decent British accent (couldn't tell if he was British or American since he did read some of the quotes with an American accent) but you could hear him slip out of the Scot accent, which I know is hard to imitate.

Blackmailed into accepting a new mission, Joe is flung back to 1960s London where he comes face-to-face with a ruthless gangster and witnesses the brutal murder of an innocent woman. entertaining
Revisado: 08-24-21
the story was entertaining and the second book made a bit more sense. though the whole transition of Joe versus the old Joe still doesn't make sense to me. Ray Porter is one of my favorite narrators and I was shocked that he didn't pull it off on this one. I feel like he did the characters' accents well but not the main character. I could hear hints of english, irish, and almost a little bit of scot but inconsistently. he primarily used an American accent which was definitely confusing since the main character is British and not American.

good narration, writing needs polishing
Revisado: 06-02-21
I almost gave up on the story but was intrigued by the premise and enjoyed the narration. the writing was unsophisticated at times and could have used better vocabulary at many times. I enjoyed the Southern accents and some of the colloquialisms, which brought back memories from my time in Tennessee when I was a child.

would have given 5 stars except for narrator
Revisado: 05-22-21
I've read and listens to many of Tony hillerman's books. while Michael Ansara is an experienced actor his narration of this book was dreadful. George Guidall who narrates other Hillerman books is much better and easy to listen to.
