When I first started listening, I thought I was probably the only person who thought the narration ruined the book. When I mentioned this to my wife, she said she gave up on the book for that reason. I then checked the reviews and found that many listeners were of the same opinion. The hype is childish and distracting. Everything, and I mean everything, is voiced as a disaster. I have not listened to another book by this narrator and perhaps he is not as bad as he is here but I keep thinking what a great job Frank Muller could have done with this material. Skip this Audible title and read the book instead. You will enjoy it much more.

Typical Andy Weir novel like The Martian and Artemis. If you liked those, you'll like this one as well.

While I thoroughly enjoyed all 20 books in this series largely because of the excellent narration by Lisette Lecat, this one is a disaster. The new narrator is just terrible. Much of the time I cannot understand who is supposed to be speaking or what they are saying. I rated the story only one star because I am unable to finish the book. I will be returning this book for credit. If the next book in this series is by this new narrator, I will not waste my money on it. Alexander McCall Smith should be furious if he has listened to this. It makes a mockery of his work. Please, Audible, rerecord this book with Lisette Lecat and I will buy it again.

Another enjoyable book by Alexander McCalll Smith. I've found his take on academia to.be accurate.

Although I was unfamiliar with the author, I bought this book because the narrator was Frank Muller. He is a favorite of mine. I think he could read me the phone book and make it interesting. Unfortunately even Muller's considerable talent couldn't salvage this interminable drivel. Barker goes on and on and on attempting to create what he apparently thinks is scary stuff when it is just boring. His characters are uninteresting, the plot ridiculous and the pacing plodding. The dialogue is embarrassingly bad. I kept thinking, "How could anyone write this stuff and think it was any good." Perhaps he was practicing for the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. If so, he has a great chance of winning. There were many times when I thought the book was ending only to find hours remained. Perhaps the author was being paid by the word. For those who enjoy good fantasy and science fiction, this isn't it. Save your money.

Another enjoyable book about the denizens of 44 Scotland Street. The narration is perfect. On the the way to the next book in the series.

Disappointing For Alexander McCall Smith

I am a huge fan of Alexander McCall Smith and have read most of his #1 Ladies Detective Agency series as well as the delightful 44 Scotland Street series. It pains me to write a bad review but The Department of Sensitive Crimes does not live up to his other work. It just did not engage me as his other books have. A major reason is the narration. One of the reasons I have hundreds of books in my Audible library is because hearing a book brings another dimension. Lisette Lecat brings the #1 Ladies Detective Agency alive. I've never been to Botswana but am sure she sounds just like the the people there. She creates a sense of place. For 44 Scotland Street, Robert Ian Mackenzie makes me believe I am in Scotland. He has just the right amount of a Scottish brogue or burr. When I bought The Department of Sensitive Crimes I expected to hear a Swedish accent. That would have made the book much more enjoyable. Why set it in Sweden and have an English narrator? David Rintoul is an accomplished narrator but is in no way suitable for this book.

it's been many decades since I studied grammar in grade and high school. This was an enjoyable chance to revisit all that I had forgotten and to see how much grammar has changed during the intervening years. Professor Curzan presents the material clearly and with many examples.
