Sorry, I realize it's a classic but at this point in time, in the twilight of my life, it shows a certain je ne c'est quoi of selfish rich people who never had to learn empathy nor develop any humanity. Very timely in that we are facing the same insult now in 2025 with those very same callow, bigoted people who live only for their own pleasure.

I didn't like it. It mirrors the persistent striving of people to rub elbows with the richest, hoping, coveting that some of their glitter will be shared, it never is. It never makes you happy.

Have integrity and be happy where you are.

True to Don Winslow's œuvre, the scenes in "Oregon," richly describe the lives of a group of high school buddies, bound together by the vicissitudes of being teenage boys in a dying factory town. The performance by Ed Harris superbly brings the characters in the story to life, people with whom you can relate. He actually performs the story. The pace is just right, never lagging, keeping your engagement with the story from start to finish.
Take a listen, you're going to love it!

The story was ok. The performances were pretty good. The sound effects made it feel like I was listening to Scooby Doo. The voice modulator drowned out much of that person's dialog, maybe make it not so modulated next time. The footsteps were the Scooby Doo part. Not my fave although I did listen all of the way through. Sorry. I really wanted to like it.

With over 200 titles in my Audible library, I've heard a lot of stories, narrators, and various levels of writing. This was a disappointment all around. The narration is just basic reading, not acting nor changes in vocal pitch appropriate for each character. Perhaps I'm spoiled after listening to books in the same genre.
The reading was basic and at times words were mispronounced or the wrong cadence, as if during the turning of a page.
Just don't expect a lot.

The story was not bad but the writing was bland without flourish, especially towards the end. No luscious phrases or clever quips. I was yelling at the car speakers to just get on with it! Too many gaps without believable transitions towards the end also.

The newer books by the author are much better written and the wordsmithing more enjoyable. I'll stick to the newer books and pass on Alex Cross.

Liz Cheney, former Representative from Wyoming, patriot, describes the behind the scenes shocking dealings within the Republican membership before, during, and most importantly, afterwards in the days that followed the attack on the US Capitol, January 6, 2021.

One can tell this is an honest debriefing and the information you get will hit you to the core. This isn't a drill. History repeats itself for those who ignore it.

If you have ever felt a twinge of love for our country and appreciation of the freedoms we have, this book will bring it back exponentially. It is important for all Americans to be informed of the truth. (If you are religious, Matthew 7:15.) Just last week, Trump said he can make the Constitution obsolete.

Rep Cheney's work on the J6 committee impressed me, so bought this book. Her writing is excellent, " just the right number"* of words. The descriptions are very easy to picture in one's head.

I had only a fleeting memory of seeing the footage of wounded Capitol police officers sitting on the floor. Learning about whole scene, and testimony given by Capitol police officers was gutwrenching. Man.
But you gotta know.

Also, I recommend the audiobook for actual audio of different people. It's a big plus!

Right from the start the story draws you in. It's Haller and Bosch at their finest. This book is so well written that it is easy to melt into the scenery and get lost in the story, on top of being impossible to set down for the next day.
I'm without words. Buy the book and be ready for a great ride!

Fool me once, fool me twice...

Struggled to finish this.
I first listened to another one by Coben because I kept seeing his name everywhere, on streaming channels, on Audible, several places, so I thought his work would be good. The first one was just ok. Male reader, Stephen Webber, who did quite well to pull it up. Fool me once. Ok, so then I tried this one. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The performance was ok but the whole story was lacking. Actually, usually I dislike female readers because they often sound singsongy and speak in long drawn out wafts of fairytale recitation. This woman read with a more natural pace but the story was a dud. I mean, really.

Normally, I gravitate to well written books that take me exploring caves in the Basque country, or espionage in Asia with a master of martial arts, and tea ceremonies with spies. Or a recent series about the drug cartels or another about an Irish mob family out of Rhode Island. Those books are so well written that one is transported in the story and sometimes transported by the delicious turn of a phrase. I listen to those books more than once.

Someone else commented that the Coben oevreur is suburban lit. Well, the best I can say is that it was a fast read, until the last hour and it was a struggle to finish it. Boring and trite. Like trying to watch a movie made in the 1970's, ridiculous plots, and a lot of bellyaching. High school level writing. Hey, I get it, he's making a ton of money from these books but I'm looking for better.

Sorry, not for me.

The overall experience of listening to this book was meh verging on disappointing. You see, over the last year, I listened to another two authors' works, and found myself swept, yes swept, into stories that had me at the start and took me through twists and turns that were totally delicious, all presented with richly worded passages that could break my heart, or make me throw my head back in boisterous laughter, or get me scared or concerned. The writing is always sharp, witty, riveting. The story and plot lines complex with plenty of ancillary characters with their own storylines. Layers and layers. Totally fascinating books. Books you want to go back and listen to again, right now.

So, with that said, this book was okay. The reader had some good voices and good acting. Ok, and this might go back to the written story, but I dislike the "whiny woman voice." I am a woman and I don't do that IRL, not often anyway, and I don't think a woman cop would be so fragile and whiny. It was distracting. Sorry, that's what I got out of it.

If you are in for an audiobook that has an easy storyline, sort of like a prime time cop show,
you'll like it. You can listen while doing other stuff without losing the sentences and having to go back 30 seconds.

This book had me laughing so hard, like throwing-your-head-back laughing. The material is great! Definitely listen to the audio book because Joe Barrett's performance is spot on! Excellent!
I usually don't buy books shorter than seven hours, but While Drowning in the Desert was well worth it!
