Historia
Simone Biles quit the Olympics. Harry and Meghan quit The Firm. Millions of people have quit their jobs, seeking happiness and defining success on their own terms. Is it a mistake? As Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Julia Keller found out, it’s not. And, in fact, it might even save your life. Diving into the neuroscience of nope and the cultural messages that drive our reluctance to throw in the towel, Keller dismantles the myth of perseverance once and for all. Because grit isn't always great. Sticking it out doesn't always pay off. And quitting can be an unexpected act of self-love.

Revisado: 04-28-25
At the very least I had hoped for a peptalk. Instead, the author presented a disappointing ramble. That’s a shame. Her premise, ‘quitting’ is not always shameful and perseverance is not always praise worthy deserves a better book.
Ultimately, I took the authors of ice and quit listening to the book.

Historia
In Kindred, Neanderthal expert Becky Wragg Sykes shoves aside the cliché of the shivering ragged figure in an icy wasteland and reveals the Neanderthal you don’t know, who lived across vast and diverse tracts of Eurasia and survived through hundreds of thousands of years of massive climate change. Using a thematic rather than chronological approach, this book will shed new light on where they lived, what they ate and the increasingly complex Neanderthal culture that is being discovered.

Pretty good story
Revisado: 02-28-22
I enjoyed this way of thinking about our human lineage. I have two complaints. the reader has a high pitch, inflected voice that I have a hard time parsing. Readers who speak in lower tones with less inflection are easier for me to understand. My second complaint is the same complaint I have regarding many non-fiction book on the market. Toward the end of the book the author begins creating an argument designed to help his or her readers to become better people. The author builds a case then winds down by providing the listener/ reader to with a verbal illustration of how that better person thinks and acts.
No Thanks. I'm doing my best. To all you authors out there, are you listening? Please quit preaching to the choir.

Good advice

Good advice. The old tried and true is the new tried and true. Surprised? The best part of this book is that if you follow the advice you'll be happier regardless of outcome.

Historia
Sofi Thanhauser brilliantly tells five stories—Linen, Cotton, Silk, Synthetics, Wool—about the clothes we wear and where they come from, illuminating our world in unexpected ways. She takes us from the opulent court of Louis XIV to the labor camps in modern-day Chinese-occupied Xinjiang. We see how textiles were once dyed with lichen, shells, bark, saffron, and beetles, displaying distinctive regional weaves and knits, and how the modern Western garment industry has refashioned our attire into the homogenous and disposable uniforms popularized by fast-fashion brands.

Horrors of the industrial revolution Continued
Revisado: 01-28-22
In case you were unaware of the abuses the textile industry foisted upon the environment, women and children this book will be a wake up call. Unfortunately I am well schooled regarding those issues. I had hoped this book would delve into fabrics and clothing prior to the industrial revolution. It doesn't. Just another grinding, scolding epistle.

I like this guy. I love his backstory and how he became attracted to the idea of luck and The study of philosophy. Perhaps one has to appreciate philosophy and the type of thinking that makes a philosopher to enjoy this book. I wish I did.

Good story not so easy to hear
Revisado: 04-07-19
I like the story a lot. Nicola Barbara speaks in a pleasant patter. Unfortunately her voice tended
to lull me to sleep. Ordinarily I wouldn't mind. This is a good story though and I regret zoning out. I've listen to the story several times now and I am just beginning to feel that I have the gist.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Tara Westover educated me
Revisado: 05-10-18
Tara Westover makes the most convincing argument for a liberal arts education I have yet to hear. She does it while telling us how she became educated. I love a good memoir and this is one of the best. However it's more than a coming of age story in which the author succeeds despite seemingly unsurmountable obstacles. If you don't have time to read this book just read the last chapter.

An instant best seller that is poised to become a classic, Moonwalking with Einstein recounts Joshua Foer's yearlong quest to improve his memory under the tutelage of top "mental athletes". He draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of remembering, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human memory. From the United States Memory Championship to deep within the author's own mind, this is an electrifying work of journalism that reminds us that, in every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Now that you've broken my heart
Revisado: 05-07-18
Now are you that you've broken my heart and left me with egg on my face I feel like a real chump. Let me explain. I've been a Daniel Tammet fan. I love the idea of him calculating pi to infinitum. His description of himself as able to see pi shimmering like a sublime numerical landscape or off of a shy and awkward lad teaching English to Polish ladies is giving way to an image of a slightly geeky guy who really wants to live nicely and has found a good way to do it. Well that's not really so bad. It's just not that romantic. Also I now know that I can improve my memory. All I have to do is all the work. Aargh!
