Historia
There sits a large house on Cypress Lane in the small town of Ocoee, Louisiana, and its history is intertwined with the town itself. A feud was born within its walls, and it is there where it will die. The Cooley family finds themselves in the middle of a fight that started long before they arrived. Will they make it out alive, or will they become another casualty in the fight between the living and the dead?

Crude, gore, a mess - returned
Revisado: 10-17-23
I returned after a bit. It was disturbing gore - not hauntings. Not my thing at all. Monster/slasher stuff and some really bad stereotypes. It's a whopping 37hrs for one credit which i thought would be a good deal - but is not if you're suffering to get through the stories.
Narrator was grating too - not sure why. Didn't help the situation.
This kind of crude, violent 'scary stories' are not my thing. Women deal with enough real life violence - I don't need to read/hear about it in fiction too.

A Must Listen for the Grieving
- De Chris en 09-25-23
Entertaining, but not for me
Revisado: 10-17-23
As someone grieving many losses of life in the past year, I can't say this helped me much (or at all).
I commend him for the effort to make light of a difficult topic. I am sorry for his loss. But grief is so varied, and we are all so different - there is no one size fits all. I think it's important to highlight not everyone is going to find the same coping mechanisms helpful.
The reviews are primarily five star so I felt a little disappointed at not being as inspired/awed by it.
If you are grieving and looking for something, anything to make sense of the pain - listen with an open mind and heart but remember - it may not be the magic pill you're seeking.

Historia
Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than 300 miles from its intended course...a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

Story could've been shorter but overall I loved it
Revisado: 07-15-23
One of my favourite novels from this author I would say. Maybe the ocean always scared me a little. I hate to say it, but this story kept playing in my head upon recently hearing of a particular, ill-fated tourist expedition to the Titanic.
Only issue is that it kinda got draggy. Could have been made shorter and tighter. still would've been a great story.

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

Started promising & devolved into rubbish
Revisado: 07-15-23
one dimensional characters (the author appears to not know how adults think and behave ... nor teens & children for that matter).
Gratitous violent sex & gore that was pointless to the story.
Repetitive lines (we heard u the 1st time! what, do u get paid per word or something?)
Ending that was beyond ridiculous and did not fit the rest of the story. Like his editor or partner wrote it to just finish the book.
never in my life of reading 100s of books and listening to 100s of audiobooks, have I questioned the kind of person the author must be to write like this...

Some art takes on a life of its own. A beautiful house. A loving family. Two kids, a dog, and a tenure-track professorship teaching art at the local university. Dan Rineheart is living the dream. But all dreams must end. When an anonymous painting arrives at the university, Dan is tasked with uncovering the artist. No title. No name. No signature or frame. It’s a disturbing work of grotesque perfection. A work of art...that changes with each viewing. So begins the nightmare. Where painted clocks tick-tock in the dark hours before dawn.

CICADAS
Revisado: 06-27-23
The story had promise but failed on execution. Repetitive, jarring and unsure whether it wants to read like a classic or a penny dreadful. At least 5hours too long. I guessed the big reveal from early on but couldn't believe it could be so simplistic after all the rigmarole so I went on.
Nothing scary about it. Maybe because it was so badly written the horrific bits were diluted. But if nothing else you can entertain yourself by taking a shot every time he mentions CICADAS. you'll be drunk by mid- novel.

Good story, bad editing
Revisado: 05-27-23
The story & premise were good but the pacing was horrendous. I expect a good editor to have dealt with this but alas. The 1st 7hrs at least moved at such a snail's pace, I nearly gave up. Then in the final 20mins they pack everything that was interesting and necessary to the story without proper exposition. Seriously shoddy editing.
I guess the plus point is that you could use this as a painfully long drinking game. Take a chug every time Margot's "mouth/throat went dry" and you'll be over the limit by Chapter 5.

Historia
A weekly podcast that reads out ghost stories, horror stories, and weird tales every week. Classic stories from the pens of the masters Occasionally, we feature living authors, but the majority are dead. Some perhaps are undead. We go from cosy Edwardian ghost stories (E. F. Benson, Walter De La Mare) to Victorian supernatural mysteries (M. R. James, Elizabeth Gaskell, Bram Stoker, and Charles Dickens) to 20th-century Weird Tales (Robert Aickman, Fritz Lieber, Clark Ashton-Smith, and H. P. Lovecraft) and wander from the Gothic to the Odd, even to the Literary, and then back again. Each episode...

Love this series, love the narrator. I can listen for hours. I have purchased Tony Walker's own ghost story novels so this is a nice, welcome extra. Not all the stories are to my taste but that's expected with such various writers being featured.

Not my kind of 'ghost' story
Revisado: 10-24-20
A solid 3 stars. This story could've been MUCH shorter. A lot of time wasting nothing btwn bits of the actual story. The good part is tht the characters are sufficiently fleshed out for u to care to find out what happens to them. The other thing is that the premise of the story is good and does make u want to get to the end.
The disappointments lie in bloated extra side stories and details that add nothing to the main narrative and confusing turns that remain unexplained. The ending doesn't tie up ends... rather serges them together w a haphazard stitch and hopes the reader doesn't notice.
Very reminiscing of Stephen King type horror and is frankly, not my thing. Glad it was included in my subscription so I don't have to have wasted a credit on it.

Historia
In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on 44 acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago.

fairly interesting if not a tad predictable
Revisado: 09-24-20
[mild spoilers- read w caution] I was very interested in the story until the halfway mark when I guessed the baddie and had to wait for hours for the protagonist to catch up. It irks me that female lead characters are written so stupid and weak that they seem to always need saving by others.
The ghost story was sweet albeit a bit confusing. leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Like if this ghost just wanted 'closure' what abt all the stories of people dying/going missing? for fun?
The narrator was Ok but her attempt at differing voices was confusing. She for some reason made the Riley character sound like a man so you have to pay close attention or you might confuse her with the actual men in the story.

You can't beat the classics
Revisado: 06-08-20
Nobody wrote horror quite like the Victorians. It's the kind of fear that is so intangible - you cannot banish it if you tried. Can't complain about the narration either. Only wished it was longer!
