Historia
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.

Great introduction to Harry Bosch
Revisado: 04-12-25
I read this 20 years after my first introduction. It stands the test of time in terms of character development and in the pure joy of Michael Connelly’s writing.

Mixed bag
Revisado: 03-21-25
The writing style is from the gee-whiz-looking-at-you-kid 1940s lit style. Cliched and one dimensional. The history, however, is a little known—at least to me—aspect of the Pacific operation in the Pacific in WW2. This could have been so much better if the characters weren’t predictable cardboard cutouts.

Shallow plot and even shallower characters. Not one sympathetic character. Can’t believe I wasted a time and credit on this .

Although Meryl Streep was of course a brilliant and the perfect narrator, she can’t save this long, tiresome meditative plot.

Good courtroom mystery

Think early John Grisham and Greg Iles when they didn’t write overblown fiction as if they were being paid by the word. You will figure it out easily by at least one-fourth of the way through, but still a good book. Later books in the series have higher ratings.

A Domestic Mystery With Great Characterization
Revisado: 05-27-24
This is a tightly constructed mystery whose plot hangs on its characters, a strength not often found in current novels of this genre. Readers will need to suspend belief in one or two twists, but otherwise it’s a well worth the time. I read it in a day.

Excellent story and performance
Revisado: 05-22-24
The podcast is the 21st century version of the 18th-century novel. This cautionary tale also borrows heavily from the 20th century Theodore Dreiser novel, An American Tragedy. Well done to the author’s concept and cast.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Flawed but worthwhile
Revisado: 05-18-24
I had such high hopes for this book, but it is a mixed bag. It’s hard to identify with the main character. Frankie grew up in wealth and privilege, a perfect childhood by her own admission. But in a blink of an eye, she becomes a nurse, goes to Viet Nam and excels in hell. Throughout the book, she is saved and rescued or betrayed and abandoned by men. Too bad she couldn’t apply the intelligence and quick thinking she displayed in field operations to her personal life. The disconnect is a major flaw.
Frankie is atypical of those who served, as she is educated, privileged, sheltered and spoiled. And therein lies the biggest flaw in this otherwise worthwhile book.
As someone who grew up in that time, I appreciated being reminded of women’s contribution, a chapter ignored in the Viet Nam saga. The book’s strength lies in its effective capsule telling of a period most Americans want to forget.
