Historia
As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life—literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far . . . Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld.

My favorite in the Percy Jackson universe!
Revisado: 06-27-23
By far my favorite book in the Percy Jackson universe! I appreciated the LGBTQ representation (especially the inclusion of nonbinary characters, finally (even if nonhuman)) and the way the main characters' relationship was portrayed - good communication and sweet moments as well as the bumps every relationship has to work through. The fantasy/mythology aspects were fun and interesting. I found myself quite compelled by some of the characters in particular (I won't spoil who). Some of the book could be rather heavy, but for a story exploring the underworld and Tartarus, as well as a person's inner demons, it wasn't ever unenjoyable. I felt there were some really important metaphors. I also feel that someone who hasn't read all the other books in this universe could enjoy this book by itself, but that if you had read them all, it adds to the story.
Overall, a really enjoyable and meaningful novel. Would definitely reccomend!

Delightful! - from a 30yr old kid at heart
Revisado: 06-27-23
This was such a fun listen! The full acting cast really brought it to life, and I appreciated how the story was in podcast format; a very fresh and creative take. Most of all, I was delighted that the main character was transmasc, like me. Representation is so important and needed. I wish I'd had it when I was a kid. I also enjoyed the diverse character personalities we get to know along the way. The story included relevant topics like abuse of power in authorities versus healthy authority - in teachers and parents (though not in a didactic way). Initially, I just wanted a fun read and didn't expect to really get into it due to the age gap between me and middle school, but I soon became immersed in the story, and the end was very satisfying. I bet this would be fun to listen to for parents and kids together. Would definitely recommend!

Enjoyable but trigger warnings
Revisado: 10-04-21
The book was great. I enjoyed the depth of it and quirky characters.
However, I wouldn't recommend it for younger or more sensitive audiences. It has many mentions of suicide and attempted suicide throughout the book. It also had a tone of objectifying women, in my opinion. It's darker than some of the author's other books.
That said, Gordon Korman is one of my favorite authors and does a masterful job in this series weaving an intriguing story and characters who you feel strongly about.
If you don't feel like checking this one out, I recommend the 'On the Run' series or 'Restart'.

Flint loves to draw. In fact, he's furiously trying to finish his comic book, so he can be the youngest winner of the "Find a Comic Star" contest. He's also rushing to finish because he has keratoconus - an eye disease that could eventually make him blind. McKell is the new girl at school and immediately hangs with the popular kids. Except McKell's not a fan of the way her friends treat this boy named Squint. He seems nice and really talented. He draws awesome pictures of superheroes. McKell wants to get to know him, but is it worth the risk?

Amazing and full of feels
Revisado: 04-19-21
I did not expect to be so emotionally invested and moved. I found I related to a lot of subjects addressed in the book, which was both painful and interesting.
The book is written well and has some strong truths. It also helped me see more into different perspectives. I would recommend it.

Irrelevant and a bit much
Revisado: 11-26-20
I didn't enjoy or understand the satire most of the time, the story taking place around the 1700s. It was a decent listen - at least the narrator did a good job. But the actual content of the book...I was hoping it would end soon, which is never a good sign. It felt like nothing was reliable and the author tried too hard to be funny and make his points. There were also quite a few explicit details of anatomy and bodily functions that got old. Overall, not impressed.

Journey for Belonging
Revisado: 11-21-20
I was initially unsure whether this would be a good pick, based on a review I read. I'm happy to say my opinion of the book is positive. By the end of the story, I felt very invested in the wolf's happiness. The poor wolf was alone a lot, but I didn't find him whiny; rather, he experienced natural yearnings for companionship (a theme more present than the complained of desire to be a pack leader). The end note from the author also struck a chord with me. We can all relate in some aspects to being a stranger in a new place and wanting our own "pack."
The book, to me, feels like it'd be best for middle grade readers who love animals, based on the overall simplicity of description.

Enthralling
Revisado: 09-28-20
This is my mom's favorite book. I, though an adult, tend to prefer younger fantasy fiction. I got hooked on this book while my mom listened to it, and then bought it for myself. I didn't expect to be so deeply invested, but I was. Some parts did seem to ramble on and confuse me, but everything made sense in the end. It's a book one could listen to multiple times and get more out of it than before. I enjoyed listening to it while working on my sewing projects for hours at a time. I enjoyed the great lengthiness of the book, as it kept me entertained, and found myself looking forward to hearing more.
My only complaint is how much suicide is talked of in the book. As someone who suffers from depression, I would caution others on this point. It is a HUGE theme throughout the book, including failed and successful suicides. This left me very uncomfortable at times, though one could argue the suspense caused by such critical moments is part of what keeps the reader invested.
All said, I was very much moved by the characters' progression throughout the story, namely the internal journey of the main character. There are many deep and poignant lessons to be learned. I can see why it's a classic.

There’s more to the swamplands than meets the teeth. In this supernatural tale of magic and mysticism, Henry Lemarchand grew up in Philadelphia knowing very little of his family—his father disappeared when he was young, leaving behind only a strange pouch of animal teeth. When he is sent to the Louisiana bayou to spend the summer with his eccentric uncle and cousin in their decaying ancestral mansion, Henry learns about his family’s supernatural legacy.

Refreshingly unique and enjoyable!
Revisado: 04-12-20
I've read a lot of books and seen a lot of the same things done, and so I really enjoyed this book and how fresh it was. It is unique and interesting to me. The premise and characters are engaging. It has its own lore. Plus, the performance of the book is excellent; it really pulled me in. I got quite invested, and would love to hear a sequel, if possible. The world of this book is one I'd love to revisit; it has a lot of neat possibilities.
