Listening to this audiobook, I felt like I was listening to the oral history of an actual honest-to-goodness rock band. It was well paced and imaginative. The various voice artist performances made the book come to life in a way that print cannot. Well done!

Fine performance of a landmark literary work. A tough slog at times since it digresses into minutiae associated with minor characters. It is a bit preachy and moralistic, but I suppose that's the point. Ultimately it is sentimental in a way that rings a bit false to my modern mind, but overall it was worthwhile.

Profound family saga. At first it feels as though the story is merely a recounting of the ordinary, but the reader comes to realize that is exactly what the author is trying to achieve. As the plot deepens, the characters develop and the reader is drawn to them with sympathy and understanding. It's impactful and quite moving,. This feels like real people dealing with real life problems. Well done.

Let me state up front that I am a Kevin Baker fan. That being said, this is perhaps the least accomplished of his city of fire novels. While it is enjoyable in and of itself, this audiobook is remarkable for the amazingly good narration. I have listened to dozens of audiobooks and this narrator was the best I've ever heard, by far. Dozens of voices to suit a vast array of characters, sensitive pacing, and subtle accents, this narration is a bravura performance.

It's hard to overstate just how good this novel is. Mantel breathes life into characters we have vague notions of from our history books. A rumination on power, survival, and human folly, "Bring Up the Bodies" is flat-out terrific. It works as a stand alone book, but for the complete experience, precede it by reading Wolf Hall.

I can't wait for volume three.

If you are only tangentially aware of this American icon, this is a perfect place to learn the amazing story of the "Liberator". Sweeping in scope, and detailed in the telling, this biography combines historical sweep with a great storyline. The narration is crisp and clear. Recommended.

I wanted to like this book. In particular, I was hoping to learn more about the music scene in downtown New York in the early 70s. I was disappointed on both counts. Think of this book instead, as a hagiography of Robert Mapplethorpe. This is a world viewed through rose-colored glasses, one largely sanitized of the gritty reality that surely existed. Full of name dropping and hero worship (if I have to hear of Arthur Rimbaud one more time.....), apparently all was done in the name of art. Unfortunately, this work achieves little either in terms of art or as an honest account of an interesting time.
