Historia
The Shape of Water is set in Cold War-era Baltimore at the Occam Aerospace Research Center, which has recently received its most sensitive asset ever: an amphibious man captured in the Amazon. What unfolds is a stirring romance between the asset and one of the janitors on staff, a mute woman who uses sign language to communicate with the creature.

Astounding!!

This audiobook completely overtook my entire world. The narrator was incredible, each character so discernable and distinct. What an incredible talent.
I've yet to see the movie but have wanted to, and couldn't resist buying this. I have zero regrets. The writing is captivating and many moments I found myself totally removed from the real world and thrust into the Cold War era alongside the characters. The book read like poetry, with how melodic each sentence flowed into the next, filled with the most vivid of descriptions.
And the characters... each was so unique and the way they all coexisted and orbited each other's lives (many times unknowingly) was beautifully orchestrated.
if you're on the fence, I urge you to purchase. I'm not big on re-reading/re-listening to books, but this is one I can guarantee I'll revisit.

Historia
It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. I was too young, he said. I would wait. But I'd learn that no matter what you achieve in life, it means nothing if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn't matter. My older sister saw him next.

God... this book. Amazing writing, amazing narrative. Will definitely be buying the next books!
Jessica Hawkins creates love stories like nobody's business. The depth to every character, no matter how big their role is extraordinary. A book is simply a book when you have characters that the reader cannot connect with. It doesn't matter if you hate then or love them; Each will feel as if they're a real person.
Along with the complex cast, this author takes a fairly popular trope and creates this completely unique experience. One reason I try not to judge a book on it's trope: the same line can be drawn a hundred times by a hundred different people and the results don't always match.
I'm not typically a fan of slow burn romance, but this is definitely an exception to that rule. There's no other way Lake and Manning's love story could go and still have such validation. It only adds to the strength of their bond.
As it's said, good things come to those who wait.
Let's just hope we're not left waiting too long!
