YEEE HAW!!!!
Revisado: 12-03-19
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Okay, let me start off by saying I LOVE SCIENCE FICTION WESTERNS!!! I grew up on shows like Bravestarr, so any story that puts cowboys into space is right up my alley.
The story starts off normal enough, with our hero Idiom Lee fighting bear-like creatures and cheating at cards, but soon the story blasts off, and Idiom finds himself in WAY over his head in an adventure reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy and Firefly.
I'm hooked, and I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. I just hope the entire main cast returns for the sequel!
David Swanson's performance (and it IS a performance, not a simple narration) is stellar! The only place it's lacking is in his female voices, but I'm willing to let that slide considering the amount of accents and vocal effects he juggles in this production.
If you're hankerin' for a good ol' rootin'-tootin', six-gun-shootin' space opera, this one's for you.

Old School Crichton At His Finest
Revisado: 11-13-19
I've been a Crichton junkie ever since the early 90s when I was in 6th Grade (Thanks, Jurassic Park). When Michael Crichton passed away, I was devastated. Of course a few posthumous novels have been released, but I needed more. Then I discovered that his early work, written under the pen name John Lange, had been rereleased! There was much rejoicing.
"Zero Cool" is the second of the Lange-era novels I've read (er... listened to), and it didn't disappoint! At just under six hours, it's a quick story that keeps the action moving. There's hardly a dull moment, and Christopher Lane's narration is top notch. A few of the villains sound rather cartoony, but I loved that. It added to the 60s camp. I almost got an early James Bond vibe from this one. I highly recommend "Zero Cool" for fans of Michael Crichton or crime thrillers in general.

Historia
With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place: the facility known as "The Cold Forge". Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests.

Good story, but a bit drawn out.
Revisado: 11-13-19
As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I was excited to listen to this one, but I was also a bit cautious because some of the more recent Alien novels mucked about with canon and really screwed up their depiction of Ripley. "The Cold Forge," however, is an original story about a researcher studying the aliens and a sadistic company bean counter determined to ruin her life and work.
The story's great, but the book is definitely padded with a lot of filler. If the publisher had trimmed some of the fat, I would have easily given this one five stars.
Don't let that discourage you, though, because it's a great story. Just be prepared for the story to slog in a few places.

Historia
The people of Earth now know that the human Colonial Union has kept them ignorant of the dangerous universe around them. For generations the CU had defended humanity against hostile aliens, deliberately keeping Earth an ignorant backwater and a source of military recruits. Now the CU’s secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance - an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they’ve invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

Scalzi does it again!
Revisado: 11-13-19
Scalzi returns to his popular "Old Man's War" universe, but this time we leave the Perry family behind and meet a new protagonist, Harry Wilson. In true Scalzi fashion, Wilson's misadventures are both thrilling and hilarious. My only pet peeve with this book is how Scalzi holds the reader's (or in this case listener's) hand with dialogue tags. The most commonly used word in this book: "Said." It made me want to tear out my hair at times.
But putting that minor complaint aside, its a great story, a worthy sequel, and William Dufris does an excellent job narrating. I'll definitely listen to the next installment.
