The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

terrible French pronunciation... but good story
Revisado: 04-10-25
I have to preface my review by saying that the French pronunciation in the narration was really awful. As a native speaker of both French and English, genuinely couldn't understand what the narrator was trying to say when he attempted to speak French. He would have been better off just using a full English accent rather than trying (and failing) to mimic French-it really sounded terrible. That said, the story itself is great. I just wanted to give others a heads-up about the narration.

A Must-Read Memoir from a True Music Legend
PP Arnold’s autobiography is an absolute revelation. While many know her as the powerhouse vocalist behind The First Cut Is the Deepest, few may realize the depth of her extraordinary journey through the music industry. This book cements her not only as an iconic singer but also as a gifted storyteller.
From her early days as an Ikette with Ike and Tina Turner to her collaborations with The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, and just about every major name in music from the ’60s through the ’90s, Arnold’s life reads like a backstage pass to rock and soul history. Her writing is vivid, heartfelt, and unflinchingly honest, offering an insider’s view of the triumphs and trials of a woman navigating the male-dominated music business.
What makes this memoir truly shine is Arnold’s voice—not just her legendary singing voice, but her narrative one. She brings warmth, humor, and raw emotion to her recollections, making it feel as if she’s sitting across from you, telling her incredible story firsthand. She doesn’t shy away from the hardships she faced, including personal struggles and industry betrayals, yet her resilience and passion for music remain at the heart of every chapter.
For fans of music history, soul and rock lovers, or anyone who appreciates a story of perseverance and artistry, this book is a must-read. PP Arnold is more than a singer—she’s a survivor, a trailblazer, and, as this book proves, a truly remarkable writer. Five stars aren’t enough!

In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from into a unique study of human civilization.

The most important issue in a gay man’s life is not “coming out”, but coming to terms with the invalidating past. Despite the progress made in recent years, many gay men still wonder, “Are we better off?” The byproduct of growing up gay in a straight world continues to be the internalization of shame, rejection, and anger - a toxic cocktail that can lead to drug abuse, promiscuity, alcoholism, depression, and suicide.

promising introduction leads to chapters and chapters of useless Freudian psychobattle. this kind of psychoanalysis has been out of date for the last hundred years, and I wonder why we should hang on to it now. there are some extremely interesting theories put out by the author, a doctor, in the beginning of the book ...but towards the end of the book it's all about how you kill your mother and marry your father.

Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.
