The Merry Band of Pirates stopped the enemy from stealing a Sentinel, and destroyed its Elder starship, so why weren’t the Pirates planning a victory party? The enemy was not what they thought it was. It was much, much worse.

CLIFFHANGER!!! NOOOO!!!!!
Revisado: 10-17-24
As we all know, RC Bray could make a telephone book exciting! This one has lots of side trips which ONLY in retrospect were not salient to the story of beating the Outsider. I do love his writing style, BUT!!! to end on a cliffhanger at this stage? after 22 hours and 9 minutes? AAARGH!!!!
OK, I still gave it 5 stars all around for being yet another great book that keeps me awake a focused on long drives. Personally, I can already see how they will retrieve the asshole, but no idea how they will use him and the biscuit to triumph so I can't wait! But I must!!!! Once again, sucked into a story that has kept me riveted since Book 1, back when it was initially released. On the positive side, Craig is a fast writer, unlike George RR Martin who still has yet to finish the Song of Fire and Ice. Hoping that means only a few months.

Historia
Earth is locked in a dangerous arms race with Rigel. McGill’s efforts at diplomacy are disastrous. Events spin out of control and interstellar warfare consumes the outer provinces of the Empire. Great fleets are gathered, and troops are hurried aboard transports. Legion Varus is launched toward a secret target world. McGill leads an early strike against Rigel’s defenses, but his efforts are foiled at every turn. Who could be behind these betrayals? Could his own government be plotting his demise?

Revisado: 03-19-23
Yeah it’s a formula, yeah the themes are well known. But damn if I don’t prepurchase every one that comes available. Old James McGill is just too much fun and Mark Boyett is just too masterful in his performances that as long as they keep coming, I will keep buying!

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

So unique, so riveting
Revisado: 02-12-23
Both the story and the performance are top class. The characters go through believable and dynamic shifts which follow their experiences trying to stay alive when so much just wants to consume them.
From pariah to hero. From hero to live sick puppy. What a wonderful tale!

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

So refreshing!
Revisado: 09-28-22
What a wonderful way to incorporate Sci-fi into a treatise of current events and the human condition both at its 2018 release and now 4 years later when I am hearing it.
What binds us? What repels us from each other. When a BIG event happens that captures the world’s notice, how do we act to the unknown but seemingly benign force that has presented itself.
Cults of personality, morality… all woven into a helluva well told and wonderfully performed story.
Can’t wait for the next one now!

Historia
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Another new perspective on First Contact
Revisado: 06-21-22
1st off, in the realm of great voice talent, Mark Boyett is among the best of the best. He could make the Tax code interesting.
Many first contact stories assume either humanoid or hive mind elements to their stories. This one goes beyond that and imagines a new threat with a new intelligence model that consumes for reproduction but malice? Unknown.
The protagonists are well developed and the antagonist, also human, twisted as can be expected. We are often our own worst enemies.
I will be picking up the next 2 in the series.

Historia
Earth’s entire fleet and all her legions are conscripted by the Galactics. Centurion McGill of Legion Varus is among countless troops pressed into service as cannon fodder for the Empire. Not everyone on Earth is happy with the demands of the Galactics. Earth has built up her military for decades, and now she might lose everything in a foreign war no one understands. As the man who has killed more Mogwa than any other human in history, McGill is approached and given a mission. He has a fateful decision to make.

Another rousing adventure with Ol James McGill
Revisado: 06-02-22
Some have become tired of these adventures thinking them too formulaic and repetitive.
Not me. I look forward to every minute of the continuing exploits of Ol James a scoundrel surrounded by people who constantly both overestimate and underestimate him.
If BV Larson keeps em coming and Mark Boyett keeps performing them, I will buy every one. I love the formula, I love the characters while at the same time boggle at the incompetence of the top brass.
And Mark Boyett brings it to life. So many accents, so many voices and so consistently applied. He has entered into my top 5 narrators with the likes of RC Bray and Ray Porter. There is no #1, they are all fantastic.
If you have been following the series this is the next logical step. Can’t wait for the next one to see how the Mogwa do now that Earth has saved their bacon.

Creation of a new Celestial!!!!
Revisado: 05-20-22
I did like this. Some have criticized it for being too anti-Islam, since they are the low level boogeymen, but that is merely setting. This last book was a logical conclusion to the insights that came from the first two, the only conclusion, really. Still surprised me. Jeffrey Kafer is a great narrator, Like Ray Porter or RC Bray great. He could make a printer manual interesting.

How did our long-lost ancestors affect our past? More importantly, how will they affect our future? Mark and Julie are brilliant scientists and Major Reagan has kept them and others alive to this point, but the most dangerous confrontations will not be with the Noridians, it will be with the Lower Houses of The Accord. Destiny is a thought-provoking journey that will cause you to inspect your basic values.

Mind blown!
Revisado: 03-14-22
Always interesting to see intelligent philosophies matching much in the human condition with a setting outside normal expectations. Also, it matches my concept of religion. Sufficiently advanced technologies paired with genetically similar beings at a different stage in their evolutionary journey. I cant wait for book 3!

Historia
Before he was Old-timer, he was Craig Emilson, a young doctor, sucked into military service at the outbreak of World War III. Enlisting to become a Special Forces suborbital paratrooper, Craig is selected to take part in the most important mission in American military history - a sortie into enemy territory to eliminate the world's first strong Artificial Intelligence. The mission is only the beginning of Craig's story, and for the story of humanity as well, as they accelerate towards a world that is post-human.

Great performance, stupid protagonist
Revisado: 03-07-22
This one will be short, maybe. I like concepts that have some level of originality, either in form or perspective and Simpson has delivered there. The journey of a medical soldier with certain skills and, one would assume, temperament quickly goes into a dangerous situation and dies. OK fine. Ray Chase has a great voice and even though a deeper baritone that has known a relationship with whiskey is sometimes challenged to offer female voice to female characters, he does that well. The cadences vocal tones shift well and consistently. He's a solid and soothing vocal talent. But the Protagonist, Craig, is just too stupid with his responses to the events that happen to him to be believable with the man to whom we are introduced in Chapter 1. He goes from a smart man married to a smarter woman, to a bitter raging wretch whose motivations I didn't believe. I listened to the intro to the next book and though interesting, I find my Audible queue of books more interesting to me at the moment. Maybe I will come back to it. Maybe.
