Good writing, captivating, dark
Revisado: 12-26-22
Enjoyed the writing style and character development. I did get a little frustrated that it took the characters so long to see the obvious.
Excellent narration.
Technically, the constant, dramatic change in volume was annoying as I had to constantly adjust in order to hear the quiet bits without getting blasted during the louder bits.

And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

meh. Almost good, but too predictable
Revisado: 02-28-17
It's like a movie from one of the chick channels on tv. At first, the main character was interesting, but then it was pretty much a spy romance with too much romantic sap and those annoying moments when the reader can see what the main characters can't seem to figure out.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Amazing Story, Needs a Little More Humanity
Revisado: 02-18-17
I can't overstate how impressed I am with the connections made between gender, race, politics, and science. More historians should emulate this book for that reason.
However, there were many times when I felt bombarded by new names, dates, and events that weren't well connected on a personal level. I wished for a more intimate, literary story.

Unrelenting Idiocy in the Main Character
Revisado: 08-23-16
The writing is fine and the narration is good, but the author makes an insurmountable storytelling mistake in forcing the reader to endure an intolerable main character without any relief. It's unendurable and I could not finish the book. Margaret is an unrelenting idiot, and I just couldn't stand her anymore. I wish the author had allowed us to spend time with someone in the historical narrative that we could admire, relate to, or empathize with.

Historia
History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

If Gabaldon is a ten, this is a three.
Revisado: 09-24-13
It's a kind of sweet story, but too self-referential, and it lacks that strong female character that is so wonderful in Gabaldon. I wouldn't compare them at all, if they weren’t both (superficially) concerned with a sort of time travel and Scottish history. In my opinion, there is no comparison. But I'm not looking for Scottish history, but a strong story, set in history, that shows compelling emotion and exciting action. This story does not deliver.
And, as an aside, the heroine makes a decision in regard to her child that I find implausible at best, and disappointing at worst. As a mother, I don't think it's realistic. Unless the mother has her own self interest at heart, which is definitely not what the author seemed to be trying to convey.

trite

I couldn't relate at all. The voice of the narrator was clipped, high-pitched, and added to the overall effect that the most important information conveyed was superficial.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

Has anyone noticed that great chunks are missing from A Storm of Swords that are showing up in A Feast for Crows? Unless Martin suddenly decided to start jumping around chronologically...
