Historia
Young, brazen, beautiful, and unapologetically brilliant, Margaret Fuller accepts an invitation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated Sage of Concord, to meet his coterie of enlightened friends. There she becomes “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists, a role model to a young Louisa May Alcott, an inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne and the scandalous Scarlet Letter, a friend to Henry David Thoreau as he ventures out to Walden Pond . . . and a muse to Emerson. But Margaret craves more than poetry and interpersonal drama.

a great telling of an important life too few know
Revisado: 02-26-25
being a Margaret Fuller, academic scholar, I recommend this book as both entertaining and informative. While it is a work of historical fiction, carefully noted by the author, it gives what I consider to be a true and rich account of a woman who should be better remembered for the legacy. We all enjoyed today. The performance of this story is excellent. I very much enjoyed the interwoven stories of other literary figures. I think the telling of Margaret’s time in Italy was excellent. The details that were left out, I believe were judiciously skipped.

An epic worthy of the Pulitzer

While a product of its era, this is a fantastic epic of pride of people & place. Terrific character excavation and historic portrayal—complete with all the time’s racism and stinkin’ thinkin’. Well performed.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

This was a great book and great listen. The reader was exceptional--none of the annoying quirks that can get under a listener's skin after a solid five hours of listening. Beautiful differentiation of characters. Clear. Endearing. The book? Simply fantastic. The story is unpredictable and irrestable with believable characters well developed over time. The historic nature of the book is fascinating and reassuring that women's words won't remain burried throughout all time. Thank you.

So I am a pretty tough nut to crack when it comes to literature. I am a literary scholar by profession. I love beautiful writing. I love a moving story. I love well-developed characters. I love something worth thinking about, not drivel. This book checks all the boxes. And the performance is superb. Moreover, it weaves together historical events that for me are poignant. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Half the Time Required
Revisado: 08-15-19
The first hour of this audio book is worth listening to. The second half is mind-numbing with its repetitive translations of Buddhist mantras. Certainly they're helpful to the meditation practitioner, but listening to them is not the way to go, IMO. I'd prefer reading and re-referring to such texts vs. listening to them as they go in one ear and out the other. However, if you were to actually DO it while listening, pausing between instructions, it might be valuable. The reader is highly appealing.

Historia
First published in 1949 and praised in the New York Times Book Review as "full of beauty and vigor and bite", A Sand County Almanac combines some of the finest nature writing since Thoreau with an outspoken and highly ethical regard for America's relationship to the land. This classic work remains as relevant today as it was nearly 70 years ago.

Fabulous book!
Revisado: 08-13-19
I really enjoyed this book. This is a classic! As a scholar of environmental humanities, I learned a lot about the early 20th century perspective on wilderness and nature management. From a literary standpoint, Leopold is an amazing writer. I will have to actually re-read the printed text of this book to remember and grasp the nuances of Leopold‘s thoughts. I did not enjoy the reader however because of his nasally and high-pitched tone. Especially when sped up to 1.25 speed. I would not recommend this version of the audiobook for that reason, but rather a different reader.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

Spectacular book performed with excellence.
Revisado: 06-23-18
This old title has gone out of fashion but needs reviving. It's purported to be sentimental to a fault. However, it's simply sensitive and beautiful. Yes, it stereotypes people but that's intentional to send a message. The message was well-sent and received, credited to igniting the Civil War and leading to emancipation. How much better can it get? Stowe struck a home run that all of us should still be cheering. Way to go, Harriet!

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.
