Historia
In 1942, in a quiet village in the leafy English Cotswolds, a thin, elegant woman lived in a small cottage with her three children and her husband, who worked as a machinist nearby. Ursula Burton was friendly but reserved, and spoke English with a slight foreign accent. By all accounts, she seemed to be living a simple, unassuming life. Her neighbors in the village knew little about her. They didn’t know that she was a high-ranking Soviet intelligence officer. They didn’t know that her husband was also a spy, or that she was running powerful agents across Europe.

Never a dull moment
Revisado: 04-06-24
The narrator did a really fine job. When dealing in nonfiction, it sometimes becomes possible to project a monotonous tone into the narration; but the author, who is the narrator here, did a great job of avoiding that pitfall. The subject matter was very interesting. The complexity of the time and the dangers of the world events, combined with the hope of a new social order, mixed to make this a fascinating read.

Historia
Folks in Moab live for ice cream socials, baseball, and the local paper’s weekly gossip column. Sheriff Winston Browne has watched over Moab with a generous eye for a decade, and by now he’s used to handling the daily dramas that keep life interesting for Moab’s quirky residents. But just after Winston receives some terrible, life-altering news, a seemingly mute runaway with no clear origin arrives in Moab. The residents do what they believe is right and take her in - until two suspicious strangers arrive and begin looking for her.

I was rooting for Winston until the end
Revisado: 04-01-24
I’ll keep it simple. The time and the place seemed true and the characters had important stories to tell. It was sad, but it was also so funny. There was just enough drama to keep you wondering how it was going to end. The narration was superb, and in my personal Ratings in my own spreadsheet. It gets 4 1/2 out of five stars.

In the summer of 1956, Jack Kerouac hitchhiked from Mill Valley, California, to the North Cascades to spend two months serving as a fire lookout for the US Forest Service. Taking only the Diamond Sutra for reading material, he intended to spend his time in deep contemplation and to achieve enlightenment.

Don’t buy this book
Revisado: 06-28-23
I have really enjoyed previous Kerouac novels that I purchased from audible. This, however, should not be mistaken to be a story in any way, shape, or form. This is a tedious reading of a notebook, which the narrator chooses for some reason to stop in the middle of a sentence to read the page number of every page of the notebook as he turns the page. The only redeeming value is in the introduction, which provides a good summary of the entire book. The small portions that are pages from actual stories are the only reason that I can give the performance three stars and please do not get me started on how horrible it is to hear someone read the entirety of the Diamond Cutter of Perfect Knowing. If you really want all of these details, and you want to claim you read everything you found from Jack Kerouac, just get the written book. It’s the only way to look at material like this.

Historia
In The Debt Trap, Josh Mitchell tells the untold story of the scandals, scams, predatory actors, and government malpractice that have created the behemoth that one of its original architects called a “monster.” As he charts the seventy-year history of student debt in America, Mitchell never loses sight of the countless student victims ensnared by an exploitative system that depends on their debt. Mitchell also draws alarming parallels to the housing crisis in the late 2000s, showing the catastrophic consequences student debt has had on families and the nation’s future.

I had no idea!
Revisado: 05-09-23
Having graduated in 1989 with a small loan balance, I was fortunate to pay no more than $81 a month for 10 years to repay my student loans. I never understood what the issue was with the student debt crisis until a coworker who graduated in 2017 explained how debt was impacting her life. I began to ask other individuals of various ages if they still had debt. I was quite surprised at the number of people over 50 years old who had very large balances remaining because they were barely covering their interest payments. I sought out more information and found this wonderfully informative book. I was fascinated and consumed it within two days. The narrator was well-suited for communicating non-fiction information. The book read like a novel, with no dry spells boring the audience with lists of facts and figures that put you to sleep. Highly recommend this book if you know nothing of the realities of the school debt situation.

So much more than I expected!
Revisado: 05-01-22
I bought this title quite some time ago and no longer can remember what prompted the purchase. While scrolling through my collection for something the other day, I hit play on a whim. I liked the narrator’s voice immediately. For a short while, however, I wasn’t sure I was going to get into the story as Sam interacted with his coworkers and his family in the opening chapters. Then he woke up and met the other members of the Sidekicks Initiative and the fun commenced! I enjoyed the interplay between our heroes and the personality imbued in each by both the writing and the narration. And you must listen after the end… I absolutely adored the blooper reel!

The way the Gatsby story should be told.
Revisado: 04-22-22
The author so cleverly weaves magic and Demons into a Gatsby story. It is done so seamlessly that it doesn’t distract from the story of wealth, indolence, xenophobia, and what passed for sophistication in the early part of the 20th century. It’s too bad that the characters were not more likable, because the world they were inhabiting was interesting enough to continue to read more stories involving the protagonist.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Don’t waste your money
Revisado: 08-15-21
While I appreciate a Will Wheaton performance, he could not save this story. This book has so many plot holes and ridiculous behavioral characteristics of all of the main characters that it was all I could do to finish listening just to see how the story wrapped up. The world may be ending in eight hours! But let’s take time to look around our new living quarters and examine D&D dice rather than spending time preparing for the coming conflagration. Yeah, right. Pass.

Historia
The secret behind France's astonishingly well-behaved children is here. When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent". French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special. But French children are far better behaved and more in command of themselves than American kids....

You don’t need children to enjoy this book!
Revisado: 09-03-20
The best thing about this book was the fact that it was not simply one mother’s opinion about her observations in France. She backed up her observations and the secondhand accounts provided to her by American, British, and French parents, with interviews with doctors, teachers, and government representatives. She quotes often from manuals, magazines, books, and studies. The reason that the book is so enjoyable is because she illustrates the theories with stories of real people and their real problems with small children. I have never had children, but I found myself fascinated by the information presented and I wanted to go out and try the techniques on some unsuspecting small people! The narrator also kept the book interesting because her voice was pleasant and the changing points of view were easily recognizable by change of accent.

Revisado: 02-16-20
When I got this book I had no idea what to expect, but I couldn’t have been more pleased with the story, the performances, and the humor in the plot. The dialogue is witty in that very intelligent way that makes you laugh sometimes just a moment after it takes you to realize why it is as funny as it is.
I recommend this 100%.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

Love, love, love this book! Or maybe I love the narrator
Revisado: 09-07-18
I listened to the book twice through- one immediately after the other. Xe Sands is so expressive that you can almost imagine your best friend standing in front of you speaking the lines as if you are living the story! There was never a false moment in the story or Xe’s interpretation of it. Loved the Maine accents too.
This story has dark humor, self- deprecating humor, dreadful high school angst, as well as truly frightening events to round out the main character’s motivations. It asks the question “how do you go home again?” as well as the question “how can you not?”.
I will definitely try another book from this author and I’ll be looking for more books narrated by Xe.
