Loved this book! Characters and voices are excellent
Revisado: 05-02-25
I liked hearing the story from different viewpoints of the different characters. I felt inspired more than once, close to tears often, and horrified by the telling of the truth of battle and war.

Characters one dimensional and plot not well developed
Revisado: 04-05-25
Maybe this is meant for 12 year old readers, but if so why are the main characters always drinking whiskey and getting drunk is portrayed as cute. Several of the plot details didn’t get followed up on or didn’t make sense. If it’s a supposedly historical novel, why were so many items and details that were not historically accurate and just plain 21 century. If it’s a fantasy novel, why are the “fae” only mentioned briefly as some people with pointy ears, then we don’t find out any more about them. The writers of this could have put more into it and maybe written a decent book. But as it is I do not recommend it unless you think it’s cute for teenage girls to continually act stupid, and become even more cute and giggly from their everyday whisky drinking with parents and others who are one dimensional personalities who really do not behave like real people. It almost feels like this is a first draft that the authors didn’t put much time into writing.

I didn’t realize till the end that the characters in the book were real historical people. I love the voice of the narrator too.

Historia
With Britain caught up in WWI, Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrooke, has declared himself a conscientious objector. Instead, he secretly works for the Crown by tracking down German spies on British soil, his wild reputation and society status serving as a foolproof cover. Blinded by patriotism and concern for her brother on the front lines, wealthy suffragette Grace Mabry will do whatever it takes to assist her country's cause.

Good book if you struggle with short-term memory
Revisado: 07-25-23
The narrator had a great voice, but the plot was so simplistic, at times I thought it must have been AI generated text, or written for someone who has a hard time remembering what they just read a few minutes or chapters ago. The narrator’s voice was quite pleasant, but the author kept repeating and re-repeating the details of the story over and over again so much that it was quite boring. The character portrayals were like something I would have read in a women's magazine story during the 1950s. The plot was simplistic and predictable. Not great literature, but more like a radio broadcast story or soap opera .

Not as good as The Huntress, but still good
Revisado: 03-09-21
The author needs someone to proofread her books before publication. I counted no less that three times the exact same phrase, " her heart was beating so fast she was sure it could be heard by other people....... Still, I enjoyed listening to it, even if it seemed a little predictable and unsurprising in many ways.

Historia
For almost 30 years, Susan Burton hid her obsession with food and the secret life of compulsive eating and starving that dominated her adolescence. This is the relentlessly honest, fiercely intelligent story of living with both anorexia and binge-eating disorder, moving past her shame, and learning to tell her secret.

I felt hurt and disappointed reading this book
Revisado: 12-16-20
The writer is a talented storyteller but to listen to the whole book without her even once addressing the privilege she had as a young white woman at Yale who seemed to have endless amounts of money to buy food - well, I just found myself wanting to cry... If even once she had addressed her privilege, and how she understands that not everyone has enough money to buy endless amounts of food for binging... If only once she had shown she understands her privilege, I would have felt she was someone I wanted to listen to. I kept listening to the book, hoping this maturity would occur. It does not. We get to the end of the book, she is in her 40s, and still, she fails to show she understands the privilege of her life. I think the book should come with a warning: this is a book about a very privileged woman. Be clear about it. Otherwise, be warned: you may end up feeling invisible, angry, and hurt if you read this book. I was very disappointed that this talented author couldn't have told her story with more awareness of her privilege.

I would arrive at home and sit in my car to continue listening to this story, I loved it so much. If you like fairy tales and female heros (as well as beautifully described storytelling), this book is for you. A pleasure of a book!
