This was my favorite Ghibli movie for the longest time, which is why I originally read the book since years ago. I still remember being shocked how different it was from the movie. Listening to it in audio was quite fun and reminded me all over again how different the story and characters are!

BTW, I was surprised that this is an isekai story. I had forgotten that detail lol!

I didn't like Alisha at all as a character and she was one of the main characters. After listening and reading the first volume of the series I kept waiting for something supernatural to happen. Nothing supernatural happens in this one, I feel like that's a spoiler that would have helped me enjoy the book more. The only thing that is unusual is a little touch of sci-fi.

As for a mystery suspense story, it's pretty darn good! there was only one spot that made me go " really Jack? " and that was the idea that exposed hinges on a door swinging out instead of in made it harder to break into. I have yet to see in my experience a door with exposed hinges that you couldn't just take the hinges off or dismantle them so that the door just kind of flops open. I already know that there's a sort of conspiracy to make people think silencers are actually something that makes things quiet when they don't so that part didn't bother me, that's just how things are in the media. It's just that door hinge kind of made me roll my eyes a lot.

When I was in middle school, I read The Lord of the Rings for the first time. I remembered how torturous it was to finish the series and know that there were no more books. The author was gone, and there was nothing left. I felt so much despair, I thought I'd never be able to find another book worthy of reading. My parents tried to help me, by introducing me to a bunch of different kinds of books and authors. It wasn't until I found the omnibus version of this book, Wizard of the Grove, (a combination of Child of the Grove and The Last Wizard,) I finally read something that lived up to the great expectations that Lord of the Rings rings had created. For a very long time, I made a point of reading this book once a year. Each time I reread the book, I felt like my passion for reading this rekindled.

I cannot speak as to whether my opinion of the book continues to be overshadowed by the nostalgia it brings to me, but even now I still marvel at how wonderfully put together the story is. It is a beautiful blending of creation myth and hero's journey. In comparison to other books it is definitely much shorter especially when not omnibus, but it is well worth the journey. In the last 20+ years, I have recommended this book to many people. I have yet to meet somebody who followed the recommendation and not been fully satisfied. I hope that if you're reading this review, you are seriously considering reading the book or listening to the audiobook. I think it is well worth your time!

I feel like the murder mystery aspect of the story was more of an afterthought, it was very anticlimactic how it was resolved. I always do enjoy seeing what antics Betsy's getting up to with all the others. I also think it's pretty funny to see how the relationships are developing. it's like revisiting old friends almost... very irresponsible old friends.

alone, any of the plots making up this story would be boring but all together they make for a very interesting story. Not much seems to really happen but a bunch of small hurdles are taken care of so that the next volume won't need to hand wave the details. Overall a fun shorter story

This one definitely aged better than volume 1. I read most of these when I was in high school and early college. I always forget that I read these before I ever read Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum series, but it was this series that made me love the Stephanie Plum series. It's almost the same character just vampire instead of bounty Hunter. I also like the fact that the love interest, Eric Sinclair, is a lot less overbearing and rapey. In the first book he felt more villain than love interest.

The first time I read this story was back in high school, over 20 years ago. In high school, I thought this was the best story ever! I enjoyed the humor and all the silliness of it all. As an adult listening to it many many years after the last time I've read it, I feel like it hasn't aged as well. I still love the story, and I adore Tanya Huff's writing style. I also know from past experience, the sequels were even better than the first one. So even if this one is a little bit slow for you, I do recommend giving the next two a try.

The characters in narration was very well done. The story was a little boring, I found it difficult to motivate me to sit and listen. I think maybe it was because I got the sense that I was missing something from the story. It's felt like this was book two, not book one.

A Fascinating Window to the Human Experience

Dylan Marron is a compassionate, sincere man who has taken on the daunting task of building a bridge of understanding with the olive branch of peace in the face of bigotry and ignorance. His open honesty, empathy, and tactfully gental interview skills are truly inspiring.

Each episode is a single conversation with an individual who chose to sling insults and death threats simply because they opposed an opinion unaligned with their world view. Through finding common ground and building trust, two very different people are able to reach a place of understanding. Though they may walk away with their opinions unchanged, their eyes are opened, and ears are listening. Each is more aware of the world outside their domain and willing to remember that there are humans on the other side of that screen.

At the end of each episode, I, too, reflect on the moments I'm driven to cringe or mutter with frustration and outrage. These are human emotions born of a moment in the journey of understanding. I have to face my own demons with empathy and how for the seeds of love and understanding that Dylan's project plants can flourish and grow into a forest of tolerance and understanding.

Love this reading and the story is great! I wish all the volumes so far were read by this narrator.
