Historia
Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

Important Story of the development of emergency medicine in the USA
Revisado: 10-21-23
It is sad to read the story of the development of ambulance service in this country tied up with the awareness of skin color and judgment based on skin color. It is important to read this book and learn where we came from.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Boring and long winded.
Revisado: 03-31-21
I read it because it was on the book club list for discussion. It is important for people with the scientific interest in fungi, etc. At the end the part about mycelia able to make material is interesting especially if we run out of these materials in the natural state..

The backstory to WWII
Revisado: 03-30-20
This book fills in the details of the war. It is the back story that doesn’t told. It refers to the mistakes and the blunders and hatred. Understanding how the agony and support during the war played out is a reflection of how some countries behave to each other today.

You know her voice. Now hear her story.
Audible has teamed up with Rolling Stone to produce an uncompromisingly honest Audible Original that honors the life and legacy of the incomparable Aretha Franklin. Aretha’s universal appeal was evident from the release of her first album at age 14 through her nearly 50 Top 40 hits. Yet this intimate biography reminds us that Aretha knew pain as much as she knew glory. It was the blues, residing deep within her soul, that gave way to a voice able to lift millions with a profound sense of freedom, self-worth, and undeniable talent to rise above sorrow.

A Classic Life

She was a long time favorite of mine. But I never knew much about her. This book filled in the backstory. The pain of segregation that Aretha and performers of her generation insured needs to be told again so it never happens again.

I am usually a nonfiction reader. But this book and series was highly recommended to me by trusted friends. So I tried it. It is ok and I will try the second book after several others on my list. I guess I am not the best judge of fiction. But it held my interest and now I want to know what happens to Ala after she leaves the Clan

Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

This is an awful audio book
Revisado: 09-11-18
The multiple voices did not mix well requiring many adjustments of the volume. The most annoying was the reading of the footnotes and references after almost every sentence or paragraph which did not add to the story. I listened to 25 percent of the book and couldn’t stand it anymore. I will return it.

Historia
George Washington's Farewell Address was a prophetic letter from a "parting friend" to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared could destroy our democracy: hyper-partisanship, excessive debt, and foreign wars. Once celebrated as civic scripture, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence, the Farewell Address is now almost forgotten. Its message remains starkly relevant. In Washington's Farewell, John Avlon offers a stunning portrait of our first president and his battle to save America from self-destruction.

Fill in the blanks of your knowledge of American history
Revisado: 06-30-18
Important book to bring out some of the politics of the day that challenged GW’s presidency. It wasn’t smooth making the constitution work. Slavery was an issue then and eventually led to the Civil War 65 years later. They couldn’t outlaw it then as Washington wanted because there would not be a Union. The southern states would have bolted before they got started.

The White House is the home of the president of the United States, the most guarded, monitored, closely watched person in the world. So how could a US president vanish without a trace? And why would he choose to do so? An unprecedented collaboration between President Bill Clinton and the world's best-selling novelist, James Patterson, The President Is Missing is a breathtaking story from the pinnacle of power.

The story reaches the level of Dan Brown. Clinton’s participation gave the quality of the White House descriptions the authenticity it needed. I had not read Patterson in a while. But now I will be back to his other works.

Historia
The Book Smugglers is the nearly unbelievable story of ghetto residents who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts - first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets - by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. It is a tale of heroism and resistance, of friendship and romance, and of unwavering devotion-including the readiness to risk one's life - to literature and art. And it is entirely true.
