Historia
Are you still playing a role you learned in childhood to please others, such as the Good Girl/Boy, the Overachiever, or the Helper? Though these kinds of roles may have gained us attention and affection, they prohibited us from becoming our true selves. People-pleasing—putting others ahead of ourselves to avoid something negative or to get something we want or need—runs rampant in our society. Saying yes when we should say no leaves us stuck in frustrating patterns.

I am about halfway through this book...
Revisado: 04-14-23
I love the content. I typically love when authors read their own books because emphasis ends up in the correct place, but I would recommend people listen to a sample of this before purchasing. It might just be my preference, but I would have loved it if the author had gotten a professional narrator.
The content is excellent however, and I think it is worth a listen even if the narration is a little grating from time to time.

If you're not a morning person...
Revisado: 11-08-22
If you're not a morning person, you still won't be at the end of this book.
I'm excited for this guy that he found a groove that helps him, but none of it made a lick of difference. I do some of these things after I wake up, but I'm my most useless between the hours of 3 and 9 am and the idea that it's just a matter of willpower or some magic set of routines will "fix" that... By the end of the book I was convinced that for some people, there's just no such thing as a joyus 4:45 am wakeup. When he's in bed sleeping, I'm awake writing, reading, journaling, exercising, meditating, meal prepping, and getting ready for my day. Why is it that we insist on making people feel bad because their productive hours aren't before dawn? I'm not a farmer and there are no cows to feed and hay to bale before dark. It's okay that night owls work under the cover of darkness. :)

Historia
"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." I didn't think I needed this book....
Revisado: 02-20-22
I didn't think I needed this book, which is exactly what told me I needed it. If you're looking for a book to accompany the transition during and following the realization that you are finally tired of your own B.S., this is your book. Out of the trilogy (Stillness and Obstacle), start here. Then come back to it when you are through the other two. You could spend a lifetime journaling through each chapter over and over, and if you do, it will be a life well lived.

Historia
Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true. And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom.

this wasn't Ryan's best book but it's solid
Revisado: 02-02-22
this wasn't Ryan's best book but it's solid, especially if you don't already have a deep awareness of stoic philosophy or haven't listed to his work before.
the thing about books like this is the people who are drawn to them usually are the people that already understand and exhibit these traits. I really wish I could give this book to a few people who cannot speak up for themselves, won't contribute in any group setting, and/or feel like other people are always taking charge of their lives. if that is you, especially read this book!

All great leaders, thinkers, artists, athletes, and visionaries share one indelible quality. It enables them to conquer their tempers. To avoid distraction and discover great insights. To achieve happiness and do the right thing. Ryan Holiday calls it stillness - to be steady while the world spins around you. In this book, he outlines a path for achieving this ancient, but urgently necessary way of living.

so much yes
Revisado: 11-01-19
I've been struggling to find a framework to pull myself out of a rut. As an atheist, a lot of advice or guidance comes from various religious texts, which just don't jive for me. But this book probably gave me exactly what I needed, and a new path of self exploration through study of stoicism and philosophy. well done book and a good narration.
