One of the older Chase novels
Revisado: 06-25-23
I really thought the plot and characters were very enjoyable. I wanted to throttle the villain, I even balled up my fists when he was pulling his shenanigans. I like that our heroine was quick and smart. I even liked her admission that there was something riveting about the villain, because, let’s be frank, villains often have to have a certain attractiveness to get away with their machinations. I agree that the audio was not the best. The first chapter was okay, then it sounded as though the narrator was reading from inside a tin drum. Better audio would have guaranteed a 4 to 5 stars.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

The narration is wonderful. His voice is on point; at times emotional and at times humorous. It paints the picture we all knew was there, Harry as a loving, decent, reflective husband, grandson, son and friend.

Heyer is the BEST at Regency romance.
Revisado: 07-20-22
And Sylvester is one of my favorites of her many, many novels. She has a light touch with the romance part, but it’s true to her era. Yet, her heroines read quite modern; they’re often their naive, impulsive, pretty headstrong, but invariably intelligent, honest and confident. I think I’ve read 90% of her prolific output and have yet to be disappointed.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 02-08-22
The twists and turns were certainly exciting. The solution to the mystery, however, was a little too… convenient. Be that as it may, it was still VERY enjoyable. A fun read for sure, especially since Kate Reading is such a marvel. How does she do it? Each character, even those in disguise, have very different voices and accents. I’m never left to question who is speaking. With her voice and cadence the story unfolds as if it were a movie, I could see it all in my minds eye. It’s a true gift, that talent.

Dear Sherry Thomas, I love you so much. This was perfection. Every. Word. Was. Perfect. Beyond lovely. I love your words, I marvel at your talent. Charlotte is such a wonderful protagonist. But Mrs. Watson, and Livia are also perfect. I chuckled at so many parts. And the very end was the cherry on top. Thank you so very much. I want to listen again. I wish ALL your books were narrated by Kate Reading. She’s also marvelous. What a treat that we gave you both.

I absolutely loved Charlotte Holmes.
Revisado: 01-30-22
Sherry Thomas is one of my favorite historical romance authors. She develops characters so well, particularly her heroines. She also injects a bit of humor here and there. The Charlotte Holmes series has me enthralled. It’s not so much a romance as it is a mystery with a thread if unrequited love weaved throughout. I tend to gobble up her books. The narrator is gifted, truly gifted. Kate Reading brings each book to life. I’m in awe of Ms Readings talent for voices and accents. This is a powerhouse team. What a pleasure

Historia
Lethally charming Simon Blair, Marquess of Lisburne, has reluctantly returned to London for one reason only: a family obligation. Still, he might make time for the seduction of a certain redheaded dressmaker - but Leonie Noirot hasn't time for him. She's obsessed with transforming his cousin, the dowdy Lady Gladys, into a swan. Leonie's skills can coax curves - and profits - from thin air, but his criminally handsome lordship is too busy trying to seduce her to appreciate her genius. He needs to learn a lesson, and the wager she provokes ought to teach him, once and for all.

Unexpectedly Funny at times
Revisado: 11-14-20
Loved Leonie and Lisburne, it’s my favorite of the three sisters’ story. I think because while Sophy was also funny, Longmore was not as full of character. Lisburne and Leonie are more evenly matched.

Slow but satisfying
Revisado: 09-28-19
I had been intrigued by Tom and Jenny’s budding relationship since reading The Matrimonial Advertisement, which is the first book in this series by Mimi Matthews. Since I enjoyed the first book so much, I started this one right after. While I like our heroine, Jenny, the “will they - won’t they” between her and Tom became frustrating. I appreciated that they were honest about their feelings for each other from the start, but the back and forth about her not wanting to marry because she desired her independence was tiring. Tom is obviously an honorable man who would never oppress her, so her reluctance to trust him in marriage was baffling. The book was very long, and much of it read like a travelogue of 19th century colonial Egypt and India. I enjoyed it because it was so obviously well researched, but I had to take frequent breaks. (I must say that because of Ms Matthews’ writing I googled Darjeeling and made my Mind up to go there because it is just so beautiful. ) Also well researched was the sepoy rebellions of the 1850s and I appreciated learning so much. But the added information slowed the plot down considerably. I urge other readers to keep going because it is with it. The last four chapters move quickly and make up for the slow middle. Alex Wyndham’s narration is a thing of beauty and I could listen to him read anything.
I’ve already ordered the next book in the series and can’t wait.

Historia
Sebastian Audley has spent years setting every city in Europe by the ears and keeping the scandal-sheets in profit. Word that he is finally returning to London becomes the hottest topic of the Season and casts numerous young ladies - many of whom have never seen him - into a fever of anticipation. Cassandra Delahaye is not one of them. In her opinion, love affairs and duels, coupled with a reputation for never refusing even the most death-defying wager, suggest that Mr. Audley is short of a brain cell or two.

Enjoyed it
Revisado: 09-08-19
I find real joy in listening to the Rockliffe series. This is the fourth installment I’ve read and I fully intend to finish the series. The characters from previous stories pop in and out and Alex Wyndham is so skilled at the voices you can easily distinguish which character is speaking. The story itself is enjoyable and the characters lovely, I laughed out loud quite a few times. Particularly at Nell and Nicholas. As younger siblings to the all-knowing, ultra sophisticated Duke of Rockliffe they find their niche in lighthearted silliness and as such they are endearing. Nell in particular is so direct when grilling Cassie that I found her charming. The simpering, lisping earl reappears at a crux point and the situation was unravels like comedic play. An enthusiastic thumbs up from this listener.

Historia
The Duke of Rockliffe is 36 years old, head of his house, and responsible for his young sister, Nell. He is, therefore, under some pressure to choose a suitable bride. Whilst accompanying Nell to what he speedily comes to regard as the house-party from hell, he meets Adeline Kendrick - acid-tongued, no more than passably good-looking yet somehow alluring. Worse still, her relatives are quite deplorable - from a spoiled, ill-natured cousin to a sadistic, manipulative uncle.

Duke of Rockliffe lives up to expectations.
Revisado: 08-29-19
If you’ve read The Parfit Knight you’ve met Rockliffe. While he was just a peripheral character in that novel he was nevertheless intriguing. The Mesalliance brings Rockliffe to life and he’ lives up to expectations the author set in the first novel. Alex Wyndham’s silky voice is perfect for Rockliffe and he does an excellent job with all the voices. Each character’s voice is utterly distinguishable from the next. And he’s good with female voices. This I will listen to again and again. Wyndham is easily one of my favorite narrators, right up there with Nicholas Boulton. I could listen to him reading the phone book.
