Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Thought provoking? Utter absurdity? You decide. Cast aside all those fussy reviews and go for the ride. Definitely funny.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

The best adventure story ever
Revisado: 04-21-22
My old dad has a 1959 1st edition copy of this book, and our family has long regarded this story as simply the best. The recent discovery of the remains of the Endurance on the sea floor has revived our interest, and it’s been a treat to find this reading by Simon Prebble which is very well done. The only thing missing here are the photographs and drawings from the expedition itself - well worth seeking out.

One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Stephenson does it again - a tasty stew of ideas, action, characters, culture, humor and etc. Darn thing’s too short though.

Bardic Richness
Revisado: 01-09-22
This re-telling of an ancient story captures a flavor of storytelling that itself evokes mythic history - very appropriate for the tale itself. The style is formal to the modern ear and it’s pacing is unhurried which adds an interesting anticipation to the scenes of tension and intrigue. All the elements unfold wonderfully; romance, treachery, statecraft, battle, personal turmoil, mysticism and flashes of humor.
We’ve all encountered this legend in other forms and from other perspectives. This narration feels as if it is told fireside after a feast in a great hall.

A Brilliant Tale
Revisado: 04-01-20
Not only is this an entertaining and compelling yarn, but it also weaves in intriguing ideas about the art of story telling itself, unfolding time, human nature, hearts and etc. Eldritch scenes abound - wolves devour a nobleman, sinister automatons threaten, bats flit, and a black cat slinks through the scenes - all performed/voiced splendidly. It's quite unlike "His Dark Materials" and it's still brilliantly crafted. (I rather liked it.)
