Historia
The Naval Service of the Honorable East India Company, popularly known as the Bombay Marine, operated in romantic areas in perilous times. From the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea, from Calcutta to Canton, the Company ships were famous for their speed and daring. The "Bombay Buccaneers" who sailed them were the stuff of legend. For Percival Merewether, 1806 would be a year to remember.

Good Historical Yarn
Revisado: 02-26-25
While not as good as Hornblower or Bolitho, this first one is very enjoyable if you are a fan of those fictional captains. The narration and production is very well done in my opinion.
SPOILER:——————-
The ending wrapped up a little too neatly for my tastes.

Unable to avoid his fate, he returns to the Viking North to face his brother and claim his birthright, only to discover that victory will demand sacrifices beyond his wildest nightmares.

Horrible, Wasted Narration.
Revisado: 02-21-25
God squadding at its worst. If you are the flowery type of fan, maybe this is for you. Good narration though, wasted on this writer. This is meant to promote the christian point of view, it is inaccurate to say the least.

Historia
When Harry Falcon, a wealthy boatyard owner and decorated World War Two veteran, is found drowned in his bath, DI John Tanner and DC Jenny Evans start by questioning his two sons, each with a motive for wanting him dead. But when the elder son is found with his head smashed in under a toppled yacht, and the younger son has been talking to a local property developer, one who’d spent months trying to buy the yard from his father, the investigation soon leads them towards a dark and dangerous secret, one which nobody can quite believe.

Stupid plot twists
Revisado: 08-24-24
The various plot twists to get the detective couple, another idiotic contrivance, to generate "excitement" are just dumb reactions by the detective couple as they stumble through the "investigation" are just bad detective writing. A decent narration goes to waste.

Historia
A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, The Main Enemy is the inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them. Based on hundreds of interviews with operatives from both sides, The Main Enemy puts us inside the heads of CIA officers as they dodge surveillance and walk into violent ambushes in Moscow. This is the story of the generation of spies who came of age in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis and rose to run the CIA and KGB in the last days of the Cold War.

Company Man
Revisado: 07-21-24
This book is well written and narrated, providing excellent trade craft explanations and further insights into a period of history. However, if you’re looking for a balanced critique or criticism of CIA strategy or actions, they are certainly not in this book. At some point you may get tired of the self-aggrandizement by the author and his favorite coworkers. He avoids or dismisses any controversy, of which there was plenty during his tenure. I would suggest several other books and sources to get a balanced and objective view along with this book.

Save the Best for Last
Revisado: 03-11-24
I am a fan of the Sharpe series, some better than others. This one along with some study of the prelude and the battle itself makes for a very enjoyable listen. I very much like this author’s style and the history he packs into the great fiction. The narration is perfectly matched for this book and well executed.

This book is a recitation of the actions in an “after action” format, with facts. I found it very interesting, but if you want more of a story or grand strategy book, this is not it. Engagements, armaments, in chronological order is laid out very well.

The narrator/ narrative style
Revisado: 08-06-22
The narrator and the chosen style is completely wrong for this book. Both would be well suited for a children's' or young person's book, but ruins the historical fiction book, which is fairly well written. Try again.

Great Story, Brought Me Back to NOLA
Revisado: 04-03-22
Very good detective work, set in a well researched historical place. While explaining the race issues, the author never goes preachy, just explains the way it was at the time and leaves it to the reader.
Dion Graham is possibly the best choice to narrate this book, he is truly exceptional in capturing the essence and feel of the characters. His pace, accents, and nuances are such that he puts you in 1907 New Orleans.

The first in this series had potential, but just didn’t make it. This second book reached the potential and was a very entertaining detective story. The narrator is a great pairing with the story.
