Great story
Revisado: 10-03-24
Story became a little preachy at times. Lots of plot twist kept the interest up. Found it hard to stop sometimes when arriving at my destination.

Historia
It is 1940 and a tragedy sends Lou and her little brother, Oz, along with their invalid mother, from New York City to the rugged mountains of Southwest Virginia to live with their great-grandmother. The story is told with both heartbreaking elegance and large doses of touching humor as the lives of Lou and Oz are changed forever.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

So much happened in the summer of ‘27
Revisado: 02-08-24
The story of ‘27 needs much background, and that information is supplied in a well told story. Even though I already knew some of the headlines the fun is in the details.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

While on a tour of the Mercer house I learned about this book. The tour guide gave us bits and pieces of the story, the book filled in the rest. An enjoyable listen. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Revisado: 05-22-15
One of the best and most engaging stories I have heard. The way it starts out, then goes back in time to fill in the characters really kept me listening. It's set in WWII, but is much more than a war story.

Good story, loose the email headers
Revisado: 02-08-15
I liked the story and the performance. The continuous repeat of the email headers, especially when there was a long sequence of them, was frustrating and tedious. If I were reading the book I would have skipped over the headers.

The lives that could have been saved
Revisado: 12-11-12
What did you love best about The Second World War?
Winston Churchill's knowledge of what was transpiring was quite extensive. You can see some similarities with more current situations of the last 20 years or so. Sometimes it is better to stand up to a tyrant from the start as it sets up the direction your future relationship will take. This is often the advice given children when trying to deal with a bully in school.
Who was your favorite character and why?
You have to love Winston. Sometimes he comes off as pretentious but mostly he is humble about his part in the affairs leading up to WWII.
Any additional comments?
Great reading by the narrator, British accent and all.

Historia
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Almost part of the U.K.
Revisado: 12-11-12
What made the experience of listening to 1776 the most enjoyable?
I guess I had previously heard that the revolutionary war was almost lost in the beginning, but after this book I can really appreciate just how close we came to losing and how lopsided the two warring armies were.
What did you like best about this story?
Great detail on what was happening. It was great to hear the colonial and British perspectives side by side.
Any additional comments?
Should be required reading in High School for US History.

Still holds up after all these years
Revisado: 11-12-12
What was one of the most memorable moments of In Cold Blood?
The time Perry Smith spent in the local jail, being attended to by the wife of the Jailor as he went through the trial. It was amazing how such a feeling and caring person, who charmed a wild squirrel to become his pet, could turn into a cold blood killer, the one who killed all four family members.
