I would have enjoyed this twice as much if it had been half as long.

The Chicken Sisters grabbed me from the first drafts of Amanda’s pitch to appear on reality TV’s Food Wars, which gave us enough information to drop us right into the middle of a generation-spanning restaurant rivalry. As Amanda and Mae take turns narrating, the action and their own rivalry begins to heat up. The drama associated with the show exposes unhealed conflicts and carefully-hidden family secrets. I loved every moment along the way, especially the satisfying and well-earned happy ending.

The audio performance was wonderful, with two voices helping to give each sister and every other character their own distinctive and recognizable identity.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about addiction as a learning disorder. There wasn't much development of this idea to explain more about why it is a learning disorder or how thinking of it that way would change our understanding of it. Instead, the author just asserted it as a basis for a lengthy discussion of the problems with current drug policies and the need for reform. I'm sympathetic to her viewpoint but was disappointed because I have heard these arguments before.

I had enjoyed Lindy West's contributions to "This American Life," so I bought this audiobook. I think this could have benefited from the tight editing used on TAL -- there was a lot of great content here, but even the pieces I had loved on the radio had too much clutter in the audiobook version and lost some of their impact.

I think the author is at her best when she writes honestly about her own experiences. When she climbs up on her soapbox, I get bored. I agree with her on a lot of the issues but I don't enjoy being lectured. I guess I should have paid more attention to the title.

"Bones" is my favorite piece. I'd like to see more stuff like that and less descriptions of menstrual periods.

I was taken with the original idea of the book, that every self-help book has the same structure and that they generally don't work. However, the solution that he proposes doesn't seem much more likely to work.

He spends a lot of time defining nonsensical terms like "Transformational Aha" and I felt very impatient with it all. I probably should have returned it, but I did manage to listen all the way through.

I think it's important to ask what kind of life we want to have as we age, and what kind of death we want to have when we get ill. Pretending that these things will never happen has put us in a very bad place.

I hope the kind of "Greenhouses" elder care that Gawande describes becomes more common, and that more and more people have the tough conversation of when enough is enough.

The narrator was better for this book, but The Hormone Cure has more realistic strategies -- this book feels very all-or-nothing and even 21 days of this kind of perfection seems impossible.

The narrator chosen for this book puts strong emphasis on every three or four words. I feel like I'm being shouted at. She might be a better fit for more dramatic material but the constant emphasis makes it hard to grasp what is real important.

The information is great but a bit dry -- I am wishing I had a print copy to refer to for the protocols.

Charts and tables don't work in audio

I found myself skipping large chunks of this book where the author wanted readers to draw a chart or write down a recipe. Such material doesn't work in audio. A PDF supplement should have been provided with the charts, graphs, and recipes.

I would recommend skipping this one -- the basic material is good but not particularly new or fresh. I liked the case studies, but those were few and far between.

Like Wendy McClure, I have been a longtime fan of the Little House books and had a lot of unanswered questions about the real girl behind the stories. I enjoyed having someone with a similar sensibility as mine (skeptical, a bit snarky, but also sincere) do the hard work of answering those questions for me. I had gotten as far as reading _The Ghost in the Little House_, but no further. This book helps me to better understand my own feelings about the Little House series.

Like the author, I do not feel completely comfortable with the books' other types of fans: homeschoolers, end-timers, etc. I think the narrator's at-times-too-perky voice, however, seems to feel like a bit of a mismatch for the author's wry, witty writing. I like audiobooks enough to let this slide, but I wondered if those casting had assumed this was an uncritical homage to all things Laura.
