Historia
College student Lauren Spierer was pursuing her dreams, joining her boyfriend at a party school eight hundred miles from home. Social and gregarious, studying fashion and rooming with friends, Lauren embraced her new adventure with the zeal of a young woman who suddenly had everything she desired. But there was a dark side that she and her inner circle kept secret. And one warm June evening, after heading out with friends, she seemingly vanished.

An under told true crime mystery
Revisado: 12-26-24
Cohen is clearly an old school journalist with a hard fought reporting record. His resume includes some of the more salacious & aggressive outlets, which potentially contributed to a reluctance to speak with him from some corners. But the bottom line is Lauren’s life mattered & what happened to her deserves to be understood. There are some minor detectable errors in here (for example, he writes Natalie Holloway was from Mississippi rather than Alabama) but I give this book 5 stars for it’s depth of reporting over a decade & for taking on a case that is not previously over saturated with other works. People, perhaps young in 2011, continue to behave atrociously in 2024. Lauren deserves better from her affluent community members, better from IU & better from BPD. True crime readers should take the time to listen & spread Lauren’s story along with the others we know so much about.

Clearly do not know what a Green Beret is
Revisado: 07-17-24
I’m sure they are great criminal profilers but MacDonald is NOT a Green Beret. He was a surgeon assigned to a Special Forces group. He did not attend SF assessment and selection, nor did he endure the years long qualification courses to earn the beret. To say he has a history of violence because he’s a highly trained killer courtesy of the Army is inaccurate. Highly trained doctor no doubt. Not a Green Beret operative. Nearly every other podcast, documentary and book makes the same mistake. Sigh.

Historia
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Great in-depth reporting
Revisado: 07-12-24
So much work went into Pulse. Very extensive and impressive journalism correcting a historical record. Delivery well done. Terrific production quality (which is not entirely common in podcasts). Hope more content companies invest in professionals like this.

Historia
Jim Nicholson was one of the CIA's top veteran case officers. By day he taught spycraft at the CIA's clandestine training center, The Farm. By night he was a minivan-driving single father racing home to have dinner with his kids. But Nicholson led a double life. For more than two years, he had met covertly with agents of Russia's foreign intelligence service and turned over troves of classified documents. In 1997 Nicholson became the highest-ranking CIA officer ever convicted of espionage.

Great piece of journalism
Revisado: 10-04-17
A lesser known tale of espionage that provides an intimate look at what it’s like to be someone who loves a criminal. How powerful a family bond can be even if you have been betrayed. A well written & researched account of the Nicholson case.
