Charming, Sweet, Old-Fashioned Read
Revisado: 06-15-24
If you are very tired of this modern world and would like to be transported to 1830’s upstate New York where old-fashioned virtues win the day, this is your book!
Written in 1908, there is nothing ambiguous or modern about the characters- but that doesn’t make them uninteresting. The author spins a tale about the destructiveness of selfishness, vanity and vindictiveness that is engaging and insightful. The hero and heroine of the book are inspiringly virtuous, kind, and self-sacrificing.
I frankly find it incredibly soothing to sink back into a world in which the protagonists are sincerely and deeply concerned about the morality of their actions, routinely pray for guidance, prioritize other people’s feelings above their own, and take pride in the advancement of the country.
You will not enjoy this book if you can’t accept or tolerate the traditional mores of a bygone era. Totally pre-feminist and pre-modern…in fact, thoroughly Victorian. And all the more fun and comforting for it.

Historia
The so-called Tibetan Book of the Dead has been renowned for centuries as a cornerstone of Buddhist wisdom and religious thought. More recently, it has become highly influential in the Western world for its psychological insights into the processes of death and dying - and what they can teach us about the ways we live our lives. It has also been found to be helpful in the grieving process by people who have recently lost their loved ones. This authoritative translation preserves the form and spirit of the original and was prepared especially for Western audiences.

Fantastic for Westerners - but Where is the Accompanying .PDF?
Revisado: 11-17-23
I wasn’t quite sure what I thought of the gravelly voice of the narrator until I realized he is the author, and now I’m so happy I purchased this. In the spirit of Buddhism, Thurman has written and delivered an incredibly accessible explanation of Tibetan spirituality that is also filled with humor. My only question is…where is the .pdf that is supposed to accompany this recording? It did not appear in my library.

Historia
Lucille Abbey runs her London secretarial agency with utmost efficiency. When, therefore, a certain Professor Hallam rejects three girls sent by her to apply for the post of his secretary and they each pronounce him "impossible", Lucille herself sets out to interview the Professor at his home in Hampshire. He is, she finds, eccentric—even impossible; but he represents a challenge and, what is more, an excuse to delay what promises to be a trying holiday in Paris. She stays on to tame and to organize him—a less formidable task than she had imagined; in fact, she grows fond of him.

Just So Charming
Revisado: 06-22-23
If you need a break from the miseries of the modern world, treat yourself to a book by Elizabeth Cadell. You’ll be gently carried back to England in the mid-twentieth century, when life felt much less complicated. It’s a delight to return to this era via Ms. Cadell’s charming, clever stories. This is not “serious “ literature addressing the ugly challenges that did exist back then; it is a fun, sweet, light-hearted romp designed to make you feel good. Enjoy!

Smashing good fun!
Revisado: 01-14-23
This may be the best book yet of the “Royal Spyness” series, and much of the fun derives from listening to Katherine Kellgren’s narration. She brings the characters to life with such humor that I often find myself grinning ear-to-ear as I listen. There couldn’t be a better narrator for these charming, uplifting, fun and completely absorbing period mysteries.

Absolutely Delightful
Revisado: 07-18-21
I’m so delighted to find this charming British wartime comedy of manners available as an audiobook. The wit and warm-heartedness of the author are wonderful to discover in 2021 and something to revel in during these dark times.
