Historia
Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is the last detective: a genuine gumshoe, committed to door-stopping and deduction rather than fancy computer gadgetry. So when the naked body of a woman is found floating in the weeds in a lake near Bath with no one willing to identify her, no marks, and no murder weapon, his sleuthing abilities are tested to the limit.

A Good Listen!
Revisado: 01-29-24
Seeing a crime from several angles was instructive, as was learning how innocent people may be made to appear guilty by well-meaning but over zealous police detectives.

Historia
In June 2021, a senseless event upends the lives of hundreds of men and women, all passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Among them: Blake, a respectable family man, though he works as a contract killer; Slimboy, a Nigerian pop star tired of living a lie; Joanna, a formidable lawyer whose flaws have caught up with her; and Victor Miesel, a critically acclaimed yet commercially unsuccessful writer who suddenly becomes a cult hit. All of them believed they had double lives. None imagined just how true that was.

Great Fun--Science Fiction Meets Philosophy
Revisado: 01-17-24
The book presents readers with an "imagine if" tale that quickly appears real. What would happen if we met our genetic doubles who shared our dreams, fears, and memories?

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

The More Things Change The More They Remain The Same
Revisado: 12-10-23
Prequel is the type of history book that I wish my college professors had assigned. In their case no matter how compelling the subject matter might have been the text was a yawn. In contrast, Prof. Maddow presents double-dealing by US elected representatives to help the Nazis in the years prior to WW II with verve and factual honesty. The parallels to our current political environment are stark.

Interesting but Confusing
Revisado: 10-28-23
After listening to the book, I was sorry that
the tale was not twice the length. The story had so many facets that I too often lost the thread. Under the circumstances, trying to puzzle out the mystery was impossible (at least for me).

Historia
On her sixtieth birthday, a woman commits suicide. When the case lands on Detective Carl Mørck’s desk, he can’t imagine what this has to do with Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division since the cause of death seems to be clear. But his superior, Marcus Jacobsen, is convinced that this is not in fact a suicide, but a murder related to an unsolved case that has been plaguing him since 1988.

Waiting For No. 10
Revisado: 10-28-23
No. 9 was particularly gratifying. The author has further developed the characters, turning them into people who I would adore meeting in real life. Too, his painting of Danes from all stratas reinforces my belief in the falibility of the human race. Doing the right, moral thing is a challenge for us all. I enjoyed listening to the continuing battle against evil of all types and strengths.

Historia
Two police officers are about to head home after a long night shift when they receive one last call. En route to investigate, the patrol car spins off the road, killing one of the exhausted cops and leaving the other in critical condition. Detective Peter Diamond is assigned to look into the case. His supervisor is desperately hoping Diamond will not discover the officers were at fault. Instead Diamond discovers something even worse - a civilian on a motorized tricycle was involved in the crash and has been lying on the side of the road for hours.

Who is Hornsby?
Revisado: 05-28-23
This recorded book is worth your time and money. The reader gets better aquainted with Peter Diamond's crew, and with the exception of some unneeded twists, a compelling mystery. The storyline teaches a few worthwhile lessons about: how being oblivious can morph into suspicion; emotions triggered by touch; and trusting people who
project an apparently pleasing personality.
Who is Hornsby? That's an interesting tale.

Historia
This audiobook should be the first novel you try in French! Following a story in French can be difficult, even for advanced students. French novels are usually full of idiomatic expressions. They use complicated tenses, complex sentence structures, and often slang. This audiobook is in simple French. It's about the joys and the frustrations of an adult learning French. It includes a good dose of humor and a few exercises.

A Real Life Insight into The Practice of Law
Revisado: 03-05-23
Attorney Pomerantz in describing historic legal maneuverings presented legal practice as it actually exists. The next time you're watching a legal drama, you might want to consider: the sacrafices imposed on lawyers' families; how long hours and pressure to perform foster unpleasant interchanges; the desire to win challenges ethical principles; complicated legal rules makes black or white conclusions difficult to reach; the outsized roles of money & social & political power; why never giving-up may lead to last minute victories; and how effective lawyers control their emotions.
