Historia
At the time of the French Revolution, one of Britain's most skillful naval officers, Charles Saunders Hayden, is a young lieutenant, the son of an English father and a French mother. His abilities and his loyalty to the king of England are beyond dispute, yet his career seems doomed by his "mixed" heritage and lack of political connections. Consequently, Hayden is assigned to an aging frigate, the Themis, under the command of Captain Josiah Hart, a man known as "Faint Hart" throughout the service.

a great addition to the ship of the line genre
Revisado: 12-11-11
For those who love a great story, and most especially those who love this genre [tales of the Royal English Navy and it's war against the French] you will be happily rewarded if you buy this audiobook. Simon Vance's rendition is simply brilliant. I eagerly look forward to any and all sequels.

A gem
Revisado: 08-06-10
If not the best audiobook I have ever listened to and I've listened to a good number, certainly in the top 5. Combining a natural, seemingly effortless writing style that delivers lively, intelligent conversations as well as the protagonists personal thought process along with a thrilling story [if you like historical fiction] this book kept me always wanting to hear more. The narration was lively and well done. If you wanted to nit pick you could find fault in the fact that the narrator did not effect a French accent [all the characters are French] so all the lower class types tended to have sort of a Cockney accent [at least I think that's what a Cockney accent sounds like]. I find that when non French speaking people try to do French accents it just comes out sounding dopey so I don't regret his decision to stick to the English version.

wish every audiobook was this enjoyable

Maybe not quite as good as The Ruby in the Smoke but still great. Supposedly a kids book but do not let that deter you if you are an adult. Colorful characters and a suspenseful, evocative writing style.

Historia
Inspector John Rebus has confronted Edinburgh's most hardened criminals, its bloodiest crime scenes, and its most dangerous backstreets, but nothing could have prepared him for what he finds on Fleshmarket Alley. In the city's red-light district, men live out their sordid fantasies, and women with no other choice sell their bodies to make a buck. It's a neighborhood of lost inhibitions, forgotten scruples, and hopeless dreams.

slow moving
Revisado: 06-28-10
In listening to this book I settled into a semi comfortable state of boredom, it was as if the characters and I had been involved in a long stale marriage. You kind of knew them but there was nothing exciting about either them or the story. The villains, such as they were, weren't all that villainous and the ending was more of a dull thud then a surprise. I didn't hate this book but I was glad when it was over and I could get on to something more engrossing.

Historia
In an expensive London restaurant, Julia Lovat receives a gift that will change her life. It appears to be a book of exquisite 17th-century embroidery patterns - but on closer examination, Julia finds it also contains faint diary entries. In these, Cat Tregenna, an embroideress, tells how she and others were stolen out of a Cornish church in 1625 by Muslim pirates and taken on a brutal voyage to Morocco to be auctioned off as slaves.

Probably geared more to women, but...
Revisado: 07-21-09
A romance novel but not overly reliant on that angle to carry your interest. You could say that things are a little too convenient when all is said and done but I still enjoyed it.

Tedius at times but overall pretty interesting
Revisado: 07-21-09
There are times during this book that you just want the author to get on with it. He goes over certain events, giving the perspective of so many involved, that you just want to move along to the next section. But after an initial rough patch it does pick up, for me, at least, when he gets into the history of Bear, Sterns and some of the central players.

Informative
Revisado: 07-21-09
A good introduction. Being fairly ignorant of things financial I felt that there might be a lot of terms that would go over my head but the author keeps it pretty basic I suppose, given the number of books on the subject that there are other points of view but I didn't really feel that Mr. Gross was pointing out any one villain but rather a series a failures on the part of many.
