Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Theological Thrill Ride
Revisado: 04-01-22
Loved this one, but being an Orthodox Christian I think I was rather predisposed to liking it. Great narration of a winding and mysterious story. My complaints with the story itself are but trifles, however one must mention that this audio book has a lot of untranslated Latin and I had to pull up a pdf online of all the Latin translated into English and it slowed down my listening. Untranslated French I can handle but I think leaving so much Latin untranslated in the AUDIO performance of the novel was a mistake even if it's probably a good thing in the book version.

Historia
If there is one belief that has united the left and the right, psychologists and philosophers, ancient thinkers and modern ones, it is the tacit assumption that humans are bad. It's a notion that drives newspaper headlines and guides the laws that shape our lives. From Machiavelli to Hobbes, Freud to Pinker, the roots of this belief have sunk deep into Western thought. Human beings, we're taught, are by nature selfish and governed primarily by self-interest.

This left me with a lot of complex feelings and the book is very liberal in its intent. But also very good. I don't think calling Bregman naive is atheistic to me. God is in us all. In you.

Historia
In Florida, 1983, two college students meet at a yard party and do not hit it off. Walter and Ruby have no reason to reprise this antagonistic encounter, but something strange and almost primordial burgeons within each of them. Their thoughts and dreams turn toward each other, and in very little time, they find themselves in an intense and unique relationship. What lies at the bottom of their strange connection is unearthed when Walter joins Ruby on a holiday trip to her home in upstate New York.

Messed up goodness.
Revisado: 11-18-20
Wow lmao that was a trip. Certainly a Zahler story, that's for sure. The concept of the audio production is nothing new but it's never been perfect. The execution here is as good as it can get and listening with a pair of good headphones or in the car with a good system is the way to go. This will not be for everyone. Incredibly graphic content but you should know that with Zahler.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Pretty great reading.
Revisado: 11-17-20
This guy nails it in my opinion. He does a great job at making the main character have a slightly German accent which really makes his other characters stand out from the main narrator's sardonic drawl. The story is a classic and loved by some and disliked by others, but I think it's a pretty remarkable archetype that has endured into the modern day. I mainly listen for the performances of these great books and this one didn't let me down.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

One of the best books written in the English language performed by one of the best storytellers of our time. Hootkins' narration alone makes this the DEFINITIVE unabridged audio for Moby Dick. I IMPLORE you to choose this narration over any of the others. Incredibly powerful recording, and a valiant example of how wonderful this medium can be.

My First "Audiobook"
Revisado: 06-27-20
I first heard this long ago as a book on tape in my father's 98 Suburban, towing our Mako down to the Florida Keys, with the AC blasting and the diesel purring. Say what you will of the story, but the performance and emotion here is divine. Seeing my dad so transfixed as a child was the first time I felt the power of "Audiobooks," and performances like these are why I stick with this service as a loyal customer.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Revisado: 06-27-20
This blew me away. I'm now on book six. I wish the rest of the series had kept up the amazing audioscapes and musical interludes found here as well as the many different voices, whose number only wanes as the books go on, sadly for me. Perfect audiobook.
