My first Liane Moriarty novel
Revisado: 11-25-24
This is a long novel, in audiobook terms- at least for me. After about 10 hours, I’m usually getting a little restless.
But this book kept me involved through to the end- even though I needed to pay attention, as the specific characters were described during the story.
Ms. Moriarty seems to have a profound way of reading each of her characters’ personality- and they are so human and relatable, that you feel you know them- or they are you.
I want to listen to another of her books- but I’m going to wait, as this one is still with me for now.
Narrators were awesome- and I am very sensitive to narrators and return anything I can’t listen to for 5 minutes :)

I loved this book!
Revisado: 07-26-24
I really liked the interesting characters, young and older, privileged and not: nervous and anxious and very confident.
The setting was described beautifully, as the Adirondack Mountains are, despite the black flies in early summer.
And the mystery surrounding the camp and the Big house was well written.
The narrator was great, also. Definitely worth a credit.

Gideon Cross. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I've ever done. It happened instantly. Completely. Irrevocably. Marrying him was a dream come true. Staying married to him is the fight of my life. Love transforms. Ours is both a refuge from the storm and the most violent of tempests. Two damaged souls entwined as one.

Well, you get a lot of sex
Revisado: 07-06-24
When I started this book I thought I would like the interplay between sassy, beautiful, independent blonde and the amazing billionaire who MUST have her.
And then it turned out that there’s more ugliness to come.
However the sex scenes- one at least every chapter- are very steamy and neither character can seem to control themselves for more than 5 minutes in each other’s company.
So, if you are seeking porn, you will find it here. Nothing too bizzare- but even this gets repetitive.
And, for me, I really only liked one character- the roommate.

Just a beautiful story
Revisado: 01-16-24
There are so many glowing and beautifully written reviews of this book that I just couldn’t pass it up, despite its length.
Thank you to everyone else who loved this book and took the time to describe it-
The only caveat is that it is a story of doctors and the world of medicine in Africa and the poorer areas of NYC. If you are pretty squeamish, you may not like it. I am a nurse- so it was really interesting to me.
It is in my Favorites and not many of my 1977 titles make it to that category. So, for me, it’s a treasure.

London, 1861. Samantha Kingston has lived under the control of her overbearing uncle since the death of her parents six years ago. Trapped by the conventions of her gender and social class, she is desperate to find a way out. But when her aunt and uncle are murdered, the freedom she sought seems even further out of reach. A suspect in the crime, she finds herself on the run, unsure whom to trust, lost in the underworld she had only ever read about in the pages of a Dickens novel.

Really good addition to this genre
Revisado: 10-16-23
I listen to dozens of books but write only one or two reviews. I choose the ones I really like and appreciate.
This is an historical mystery with the typical format- young woman in trouble, beautiful/pretty, smart, and usually in some type of financial straits. This can become very Harlequin-y, and if so, that’s it for me.
This story has all of the above, but it’s not sickeningly sweet or crude with first time sex scenes.
The protagonists are likeable, intelligent but not overly sarcastic and rude, and the Victorian woman is assertive with the males around her without being obnoxious.
I really liked it and hope to read more from this author. The narrator was lovely to listen to, also, which can make or break a story.

A little disappointing
Revisado: 05-21-23
I have to agree with some of the other negative reviews re: the main characters acting like high schoolers on the dating scene.
I wanted to slap Jenny throughout this book with her childish jealousy and it made it harder for me to enjoy the mystery.
Just my opinion

Definitely worth a credit!
Revisado: 05-09-23
I listen to historical mysteries almost exclusively, but I haven’t read many in the Gilded Age of New York. This was well written and enjoyable. It concerned not only the “upstairs-downstairs” of the day, but the social injustices that were going on as well.
I really liked the main character, Jane, who had her presence in both and a murder, besides. Not a sappy love story, but an intriguing love/marriage/money story to follow.
Already purchased book 2 and I’m looking forward to getting started!
