Historia
In this companion to the HBO miniseries - executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman - Hugh Ambrose reveals the intertwined odysseys of four US Marines and a US Navy carrier pilot during World War II. Between America's retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan.

A story of heroism
Revisado: 06-20-23
This book vividly brought home the experiences and bravery of my father, a US Marine on Guadalcanal. How any of the survivors of this war were able to return to rewarding and successful lives is amazing to me. They make me so proud.

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

A Fascinating and Tragic Tale
Revisado: 01-12-23
This s history of the struggle between White colonization and the Native Americans of the Southwest US as an amazing history. Focused on the life of Kit Carson and the many attempts to “civilize” the First nations. The disasters and atrocities visited upon the tribes and their efforts to make peace with the US government and military is a moving tribute to the to the leaders who finally did justice to the natives. Extraordinarily well written and narrated, this book is masterful.

Historia
Ballad of the Whiskey Robber tells the hilarious and improbable true story of Attila Ambrus, the Robin Hood of Eastern Europe. He's the onetime pelt smugger, goaltender (possibly the worst in the history of pro hockey), pen salesman, Zamboni driver, gravedigger, church painter, roulette addict, building superintendent, whiskey drinker, and native of Transylvania who's decided that the best thing to do with his time is to rob as many banks as possible.

A poor boy makes … not so good
Revisado: 12-24-21
The story of the Whiskey Robber, a refugee to Hungary from Transylvania, is a riotous trip full of incompetent Budapest police, bumbling sidekicks, and some very clever moves by the Whiskey Robber. Lots of fun!

Historia
As we approach the bicentennial of Lincoln'sbirth in 2009, this work provides a genuinely novel, even timely, view of the most written about figure in our history. Tried by War offers a revelatory portrait of leadership during the greatest crisis our nation has ever endured. How Lincoln overcame feckless generals, fickle public opinion, and his own paralyzing fears is a story at once suspenseful and inspiring.

A good review of Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief
Revisado: 06-25-21
The difficulties Lincoln encountered with his Civil War generals is well explained. Suffering through a variety of worthless commanders, Lincoln was at a loss until he promoted Grant to overall command. Read by one of my favorite narrates, this is a very enjoyable production.

Superb!
Revisado: 11-09-19
Excellent presentation exploring the ideals behind the establishment of the US government and adoption of the constitution. References to great philosophers, political theorists, and the founding fathers from early Greece to the 18th century succinctly describe the beliefs underlying the US republic. A truly exceptional presentation.

Historia
In The March of Folly, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian Barbara Tuchman tackles the pervasive presence of folly in governments through the ages. Defining folly as the pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests, despite the availability of feasible alternatives, Tuchman details four decisive turning points in history that illustrate the very heights of folly in government.

This book is a true classic of history
Revisado: 09-09-19
Humankind’s failing attempts to build stable and effective governing structures is detailed with skill and touch of humor. Tuchman is a true giant in historical writing, and this book is one of her best. Using examples from classical Greece, the Catholic papacy, and up to the Vietnam War, she proves Lord Acton’s observation, “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
