Historia
All newly minted pediatrician Jamie Malek wants is to borrow a roasting pan for Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, that requires her to interact with Marc—her best friend’s troublemaking brother, who’s now a tech billionaire. He’s the one who got away. She’s the one who broke his heart. Outside, a howling blizzard. Inside, a crackling fire. Suddenly, being snowbound with the man she never expected to see again might not be such a bad way to spend a winter’s night.

I bought this for $.88 but wish I hadn’t! It was more angsty than I had hoped, and the drama was based on a misunderstanding, trope. Not my jam.

Historia
Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her. Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

But a little boring. I liked all the characters, but it could’ve used more suspense and depth.

Historia
After years of scraping by, Caleb Murphy has graduated from college and is finally getting to start a new life. Except he suddenly has no way to get from Boston to Los Angeles. Then, to add to his misery, there’s perfect, privileged Peter Cabot offering to drive him. Peter Cabot would do pretty much anything to skip out on his father’s presidential campaign, including driving across the country with a classmate who can’t stand him. After all, he’s had plenty of practice with people not liking him much - his own family, for example.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-27-23
Repetitive. Angst interspersed with sex. Sex interspersed with angst. There was no reason for their relationship to resolve, except for escalating intimacy in bed. And because they reached California! Conversations and thought bubbles had the same tenor throughout. I ended up skipping a lot of it. I usually love Cat Sebastian. Hope I can get my credit back.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-13-23
It felt like this title was trying to jump on the bandwagon of the success of the Thursday murder club series, But wasn’t nearly as good. Characters aren’t fleshed out. It’s darker and doesn’t have the funny bits that make the Thursday murder club books so appealing. I’m sorry I wasted the credit.

Sweet but simplistic
Revisado: 07-31-23
This was mainly interesting to me because it’s an early effort by the author, especially comparing this with the much more recent book that follows up with Thomas and Tasha. You can really see how she developed as a writer. I usually like the narrator, but it seems like somebody told her to whisper for Frisco’s voice. Pretty irritating.

He's been working for an environmental activism group, but he's out of control, trying to wipe out the memories of a tough childhood in his efforts to save the planet. It's the last place on earth he expects to find comfort or friendship.

This is not one of the author’s best. The story is all over the place with lots of OTT dramatic plot points that don’t connect with each other, interspersed with emotional outbursts from the protagonist. I could never care very much about the characters who seem to only have one or two defining traits. Lots of sex.

Such an unusual romance!
Revisado: 09-17-22
This book is so very moving. It particularly grabs me because of the insight into the highwayman MC’s character and motivations and self-delusions. But OMG, so much angst! Much more than I would normally endure.
Partly I got hooked because I identified madly. A lifelong reader, I started listening to audiobooks following a concussion that permanently left me with frequent dizziness and an inability to read words on the page for any length of time, or to concentrate on nonfiction audiobooks. This novel opens with the male MC suffering from dizziness and balance problems due to deafness in one ear, a condition that leaves him considering himself a has-been. But perhaps many romance readers could identify something that’s disappointing about themselves in the face of a still youthful and longing and even a little quixotic heart within, and feel a similar pull toward both this touchingly complex character and the brave, fiercely honest female MC.
And I dare you not to be enchanted by their relationships with the animals in the book, each of whom are wonderful characters all their own. (CW: All animals are rescued and end up OK, But there is one difficult scene involving mistreatment.)
The plot involving the villain is OTT and not my favorite part of the book except in the ways that it develops the characters. If you can get through the angst and suspense, everything turns out OK in the end, And some of the intervening awful and apparently hopeless situations are resolved quite quickly.
I subtracted one star for the epilogue. The penultimate chapter has a great closing line and I wish that had been the end of the book. If you just want to know that all ends well, you can probably listen to the first Two minutes of the epilogue and be more than content. If OTOH you go in for unexpected fairy tale endings (for me disappointing in this book where balancing moonshine with earthiness is a major theme of the book) and want to enjoy a gratuitous and unlikely sex scene to boot, then the rest of the epilogue is there for you!

No one is more shocked than Ginger Mitchell, former call girl, current PI, at how well this whole crime-fighting thing is going. In the short time since she returned home to Portland, she’s taken down an entire crime ring and exposed a corrupt police department. Not bad for her first year on the job. So much worse than vol 1
Revisado: 02-15-22
Volume one was entertaining and had a cliffhanger ending, so I got sucked into buying volume two. What a mistake. Snark devolves into preadolescent obnoxiousness and frustrated rage/ hissy fits as the good guys repeatedly get mad at each other for no reason. No characterization whatsoever. Just one challange after another magically (and briefly) appears for our cartoonish characters. They collect treasure (really). They collect weapons. They collect favors from Powerful scary goons who are inexplicably fond of the main character, possibly for her impressive stripper’s body, which we are constantly reminded about. Listening to this feels like being trapped with a couple of clever, chortling, squabbling 12 year old boys inventing a video game. If this appeals to you, by all means buy it.

Historia
Ash Winters is barely holding on, near drowning in his own darkness and fear. He lives a gray shadow of a life, sullen and cynical, unable to remember hope or happiness - much less the distant, fading glitterball of love. It has to be a sick joke of the universe that he finds himself hooked up with good-humored Essex boy Darian Taylor, a wannabe model in a sparkly jacket and a fake tan. Darian may not be an intellectual giant, but he's hysterically funny, and he's got the courage to challenge Ash to live again.

Revisado: 12-21-21
Sweet, charming, intense. Content warning for suicidal Ideation and depression. If you’re subject to depression, some parts when Ash is sinking can be pretty hard to listen to. I had to skip ahead and read the last couple of chapters to ensure there was a happy ending before I went back and read the whole book through. Darias is now one of my favorite romantic heroes. Nicholas Boulton is superb.
