Light on Horror, Heavy on Mediocre Narration
Revisado: 12-08-24
Christmas in the Empty Cabin doesn't have a huge impact on horror/shock value. But the stories are interesting enough to continue to read the book. The underwhelming element of this book stems from the narrator. His tone and indication of the stories do not fit genre of the book. Most of the time, it felt like a satire or dark humor short stories set during the holidays.

Historia
Some of the most beautiful people in the world are not human. They have no souls, feel no emotion, and are pure evil. You can tell by the color of their dark, dead eyes. Samuel Glaus knows this. He is the son of a human mother and soulless father. He is, after all, half human and a hunter of the soulless. He is also in love with one who cannot love him back.

It’s like a tamer version of Buffy
Revisado: 07-27-23
Redemption offers readers a interesting and unique tale of the soulless creatures that stalk the streets at night draining people of blood and in a shocking twist—-emotions. While hunters aware of their presence track them down one by one. The rippling effects of the soulless and their involvement with the humans eventually lead to accidents, attacks and chaos that seems to be directly linked to proximity to the soulless in the area.
I know what you may be thinking; the soulless are vampires and the hunters are like slayers. To that I would say yes and no. In Redemption, the soulless are not what they appear, not even to themselves.
I would recommend this book to vampire/ myth and supernatural book lovers. As well as to those who enjoy instalove stories for the MC leads whose bond and affection for each steadily grows as the book continues.
Likewise, it’s a book for Christian romance readers who like bits of action, love and loose ties to biblical references.
The only warning for this book would be to mold violence, blood drinking, emotion zapping and explosions. Like the title suggests, it came across as a much tamer version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with banter, humor, sexual tension and historical lore.

Exciting Fantasy & Fascinating World Building
Revisado: 04-28-23
Rise of a Dark Throne gives its listeners a rich, detailed and entertaining experience. With a fantasy world full of magic and unique lore for the people of Sundom and Masa.
The narrator’s ability to give the listeners different cadences for each character I felt really brought the story together. And even though the story is in 3person perspective, I found I could really connect with the characters on a deeper level. Likewise, the narrator’s pacing and the emotion invoked into the book will have listeners wondering what to expect next.
The listeners will really feel for our main character, Sole, as we see her world shift completely upside down over night and she’s thrust into a position of power during the rise of the darkness plague.
With that being said, I think Rose of a Dark Throne is more plot driven than character driven;so at times I felt I questioned character motives.
Even thought the characters are in their early twenties, it still reads as a YA for most of the book.
I’ve stopped reading YA books but I do hope to see more of Sole and get some answers regarding secrets about her family 😃.

Overall, I was confused 😶
Revisado: 03-29-23
I found this book to be interesting, unique and a blend of genres; not just paranormal fiction and fantasy. Return to Hoodoo presents readers with a tough and survival-mood protagonist with the FMC, Gwendolyn. The quirky and fun residents of Hoodoo leave their marks on the reader as we follow Gwen reconnect with distant family, old friends/lovers and herself when gifted with a family property. But with a course of death following her around, ghosts and a potential love interest(s) things quickly become more complicated than she expected.
And while I found the overall concept intriguing, I believe if the delivery of the story were clearer and the author were more decisive about how our main character was meant to be portrayed I would not have struggled with this book as much.
I understand from the beginning that Gwendolyn would not be a reliable source of information as it is in first person and there’s only so much her character knows and is aware of.
But to me it felt like every other passage would introduce a new contradiction to the story that was already explained to us. And at times, the story was reintroducing or explaining something new to the reader at random moments in the book.
I know this is the first book in a series and perhaps I need to read the next book to gain a better sense of Gwendolyn, her complex past and intense little town.

An evening of no-strings fun with someone who knew what they were doing and wasn't afraid of getting a little wild. One look at the gorgeous bartender with the midnight skin and waving tentacles, and she knew she needed to feel all those…appendages wrapped around her before the night was out. Lucky for her, the bartender was a woman who went after what she wanted, and oh, did she want.

More Than You Expect
Revisado: 10-29-22
As spicy novellas go, this books gives us a clear picture of the world and the characters we expect to see. I really like the free and openness of the story when it comes to relationships and romance partners. My favorite character in this book was Syd; she’s strong, funny, protective and beautiful. And I wasn’t just rooting for one pairing over the other. I really felt like the relationship between the three leads just made sense is very natural and it did not seem forced at all. The narrator for this book is great. She spoke with a clear tone but differentiated the character voices with their dialogues perfectly. I could always tell the difference between each of the characters and I liked the way she gave Fenn’s character a subtle southern accent. Overall, I think the novella’s lightheartedness and exotica-filled story is amplified by the narrator performance.

Good Easy Romance Audiobook
Revisado: 12-31-21
started this audiobook today and while the Male narrator took a chapter to grow on me; I think this book was pretty good. Cute romance that blossoms from a “situational” trope like waking up married to someone you barely know. Simone and James communicate their feelings and their thoughts in a fairly adult way which is refreshing; I could also relate to Simone’s character not being able to recognize her fear of exploring relationships and the social scene due the demands and responsibilities of her family. It was an element I strongly related to. But we do get to see her character have some growth in the book. That’s always a good thing. James’s certainty and honesty was also a great part of this book and I would recommend this to others looking for an easy going romance book between two adults who actually spend a good part of the book communicating.

Ehh...Forgettable.
Revisado: 01-24-20
I’m into futuristic, steampunkish narratives but I don’t know if I would have made it through this book if it was with a different narrator and that’s saying something considering she was both easy and ignorable to listen to. Often with it in the background playing I found I had to relisten parts just to keep track of everything.
What I think bothered me the most was that it never really felt like the story or the protagonist knew in which direction it wanted to go; hardcore survival, anxious and unsure warrior, defensive, fight back type or just plan old indifference?
This was my first time hearing a book by this author and the narrator but I might try to give them each a second chance down the line with something else. If anything to just alter my first impression of them.

What’s in a name? A lot. The name Tinaca, for example, has been passed down in the Jones family for generations of women. In fact, the Joneses name a Tinaca every other generation, to let the name breathe a little. To let each Tinaca shine. And shine is exactly what Tinaca Jones intends to do.

Only Listened For Retta
Revisado: 01-20-20
While I find the narrative of the story entertaining and I enjoyed the book—author’s fictitious approach of Tinaca’s character was questionable. I liked the anecdotes of pop culture and layered details of the story. As well as the nods to classical soap opera storylines, I know that the author had his start in Daytime tv. However, I think that the author took way to many liberties in writing a person of color’s dialogue in such a stereotypical (borderline offensive) manner like this. I hope that the tone, style and syntax of the character really was an embellishment of Retta herself. But if it wasn’t I remain on the fence about this book as a whole to be honest.

Captivating From Start To Finish
Revisado: 10-06-16
What made the experience of listening to Firestorm the most enjoyable?
Besides, the context, I think the fact that the listener is brought right into the heart of the story is what made listening to this audiobook so enjoyable. Firestorm picks up immediately after where book one last left off, following Eric and his team's bittersweet victory of finally locating the sole surviving descendant of Aria, Enala, but at a great cost for all of them. This small victory seems to dim in the realization that the growing darkness unleashed by Archon and his followers is only just the beginning and is more deeply rooted in the hearts and minds of once thought to be trusted allies then any of them realized.
And with a soul stealing, possessed, zombie-demon-king in hot pursuit, Enala, Eric and their small team struggle even more to get to the Sword Of Light in time once they're forced apart. And with the gods gone, it makes the narrative seem and feel even darker as their world begins to crumble around them in this foreboding wave of darkness.
What did you like best about this story?
I think what I liked the most about this book was the way in which Eric takes lead on his mission which much less reservation or hesitation.
In comparison to Stormwielder, his maturity and character growth is apparent. I also really liked that this book is essentially Enala's story with some noticeable parallels to Eric's story as the reader sees her come into her own and learn a few hidden truths about herself she never knew before.
Lastly, I loved seeing Gabriel's path of redemption of sorts in Firestorm, as his character finally begins to works his way through his pain and grief since Oaksville and starts to make amends with Eric. I did have a few questions regarding the details behind Eric's history revealed in this book and his connection to the sword, as it opens up a few questions about other possible wielders.
What does David Stifel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Overall, I found that I liked this book a bit better than the first. Having this book as an audiobook this time around also made the story a bit more exciting. The narrator's baritone/alto voice was perfectly suited for this story filled with magic, demons and gods. The pacing was easy and I never felt lost or distracted listening to the story and it was easy to get sucked into from start to finish.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, there were a few jaw dropping moments while listening to this book, but all in a very positive, suspenseful way.
Any additional comments?
Just that I can't wait to see what happens in the final book of this trilogy!
