Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Historia
This charming piece of social observation throws a gentle spotlight on life in a small village in northern England of the 1850s. The middle-aged ladies, existing in rather impoverished circumstances, nevertheless maintain the rules of politeness which they feel they should live by.

Great Naration
Revisado: 01-20-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Cranford to be better than the print version?
I like to read and listen at the same time on some of these English novels because the hear pronunciations in a tongue more like they were used at the time of the writing.
What did you like best about this story?
Over the years I have read this story many times and I have also seen the PBS version with Judy Dench. It reminds me a little of the very small town I grew up in......everyone knew everyone.
Have you listened to any of Clare Wille’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have just added this narrator (Clare Wille) to my list of personal favorites.

Historia
It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

Great Narration
Revisado: 11-16-14
Where does The Paying Guests rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I didn't care for this story. I thought it was another with the same name by another author. I was most interested in the narration by Juliette Stevenson.
Which character – as performed by Juliet Stevenson – was your favorite?
Any narration by Juliette Stevenson is worth listening to. She has such a wide range of characters in her voice.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wasn't happy with the story. It was a little too depressing for me.
