January is a dying planet - divided between a permanently frozen darkness on one side, and blazing endless sunshine on the other. Humanity clings to life, spread across two archaic cities built in the sliver of habitable dusk. Sophie, a student and reluctant revolutionary, is supposed to be dead, after being exiled into the night. Saved only by forming an unusual bond with the enigmatic beasts who roam the ice, Sophie vows to stay hidden from the world, hoping she can heal.

Incredible
Revisado: 03-04-20
I could not stop listening to this book. It reminded me a little of The Dispossessed and a little of Lilith’s Brood, but definitely had a voice and interesting themes of its own. I’m sad that it’s over and I have to go back to reading other authors. Keep writing Charlie Jane Anders! I love your work!

Historia
We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly, the decisions that affect our lives—where we go to school, whether we can get a job or a loan, how much we pay for health insurance—are being made not by humans, but by machines. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules.

More nuanced than other discussions
Revisado: 07-25-19
I infinitely preferred this book to Algorithms of Oppression because it has a more nuanced take.

Best book yet, still mad at narrator
Revisado: 02-04-18
This is the perfect ending to this series. I am still mad that the narrator changed Kettricken's character so drastically.

Hobb still great, terrible voice acting
Revisado: 01-27-18
If you've made it this far with all of her books, you can't possibly resist listening to the last few. It's great to see everything tie together at last. Definitely listen to the other trilogies if you haven't.
Why on earth did the voice actor not even bother with any continuity? Loyal fans reaching the end of a long series don't want to hear inconsistent pronunciation, let alone total character changes (Kettricken being the most egregious). So disappointed in the terrible voice acting.
