Not the best McFadden

I like her books, but this one is lacking. The main character’s sappy, dripping with desperation, inner dialogue was ‘sooo cringe’. I rolled my eyes and laughed at it too many times to count. Not a spoiler but IMO, It’s not believable for a Nurse Practitioner (i.e. a smart woman) to be breaking the rules and outing herself as unmarried and single at a max security prison on day one of the job. Dumb. That, along with Brooke’s other dumb decisions throughout the story, led me to conclude that she shouldn’t be in charge of anything. I wouldn’t let Brooke treat anyone I know but my ex.
On the bright side…
The narrator did her job! Also, I wanted to know the ending, McFadden’s twists are always fun so I stayed til the end for one more (albeit unforeseen) last eye roll. Enjoy!

I live a good story. I don’t love a story riddled with slight left wing jabs at the right wing or vice versa. If I wanted a political book, I’d pick one.

Lost me about halfway through

I liked 2 other of Keplers books with detective Linna. Not this one so much. More of a spy novel.

Good even though it was gory!

We all do it. Guess the ending. Wait to be wrong. Hope for surprise and brace for disappointment. Not this time! This was a fun listen. Good enough to check out book 2 in the series! TBD on that.

Narrators can make or break an audiobook. I first listened to Ray Porter in the “Bobiverse” sci-fi series. I’m usually a stand alone story reader, but that was the first series I got into and he’s great. Easy on the ears.

The harpsichord meets the monotone narrator

The story is everything you’d want and expect. Turns out, Kathy Bates was well cast and did a phenomenal job. The narrator was monotone and it was hard to know where the breaks were, when he toggles between personal thought and listening. The harpsichord I cannot explain. Whyyyyyy?? Oh Lort. Fix it, that was horrid. I wouldn’t listen to it again but I bought the paperback for a second round.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

This was a joyride listen. Everything was done just well enough that I opted to actually write a positive review. The twist was great, characters could have been a little more developed, but for a suspense thriller it fits the bill!

Seen the movie? Listen anyways.

If you loved the movie, I’ll tell you they did a bang up job with it and even knowing the twists, I still LOVED this book. The casting in the movie was spot on. Not a huge fan of the narrators voices but having the movie in my head helped get past that. A 19 hour listen in 6 days. I work full time, that’s some sort of record for me. My husband is annoyed. It’s that good.
