Historia
For Melanie Drake, school guidance counselor in a small Virginia town, the day’s challenges typically involve a playground scuffle or a student skipping school. It’s worlds away from her previous career as a vital part of the Office of Special Investigations. There, she devoted herself heart and soul to covert operations, the riskier the better.

Just awful
Revisado: 08-31-24
I'm giving myself permission to stop listening to this drivel. The first hours are details of a perfect child in a perfect family, then the tiresome questioning of career choice and learning how to date. This story was supposed to be so much more, but there are so many better listens out there, I can't waste my time with this one any more. You shouldn't, either.

Historia
For years, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles.

Beyond boring!
Revisado: 07-10-24
The premise of this book had so much potential but the two-dimensional characters and mess of a story arch made it tedious. I stuck with it to the end, hoping something would improve, but alas, it didn't. Save your credit!

Plenty of Twists and Turns!
Revisado: 06-27-24
This murder mystery has plenty of surprises and even when you think you have figured out the who and why, the cast of characters shifts gears and suddenly, there's another reason to suspect everyone!
The narrator did a great job of providing different voices for various characters. Highly recommend!

Bringing the Classics to Life
Revisado: 06-09-24
After listening to this short story, I reread the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Ms. Miller does a wonderful job of bringing these ancient characters to life and while her ending is different from the one offered in my Greek mythology, I enjoyed hers better. This is a more human version of the Pygmalion myth.

A Total Win!
Revisado: 06-09-24
Win is the character you almost want to hate - self-absorbed, over-confident and RICH! But as the story develops, his many flaws start to make him more human and by the end, you just love this character. I really hope there are more books featuring Win. As always, Mr. Coben throughs in plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing!

Historia
Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

Needed More Research
Revisado: 06-09-24
This story provides important insights into the lives of freed slaves and their heroic efforts to create a community for themselves after emancipation. However, this book constantly stepped out of the time period with phrases like 'OK' and the mention of items like tissues, which wouldn't have been used by cash-strapped whites in 1885, since they weren't mass-produced until the 1920s. And while the overseer was a despicable character, there must have been some other verb to describe his expression besides 'sneering'.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

An Interesting Listen
Revisado: 06-09-24
These short stories carry all of Mr. Towles character development and pacing. Some of them are a real treat, others just leave the listener with the sad longing of a 'Gentleman in Moscow'. It is definitely worth a credit and if you enjoy stories set in New York City, this will fit the bill nicely, although the novel at the end is set in Hollywood.
