Tired, formulaic pap
Revisado: 01-17-25
What a sad ending for the ironman of Israeli intelligence! He is jealous of the local bartender who has eyes for his wife who is getting more beautiful with each book, and who is always engaged in making superb meals which flood the room with delicious aromas. The brilliant violin virtuoso is back and engages in sophomoric seductive badinage with Gabriel, who ignores her copulative innuendos because he is worried that his wife is having it off with the bartender. Then there is the other reliable trope, snotty Brits who like to have "luncheon" at Claridges, with excellent wines lovingly recounted and who have names like Dimbleby. The women are all ridiculously gorgeous and dress in haute couture which is described in unnecessary detail by the novelist who seems to have developed a keen interest in high fashion.

Historia
In London, twenty-six-year-old Venetia Stanley—aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless—is part of a fast group of upper-crust bohemians and socialites known as “The Coterie.” She’s also engaged in a clandestine love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state.

Cities and countries engulfed by panic and death, desperate for vaccines but fearful of what inoculation may bring. This is what the world has just gone through with Covid-19. But as Simon Schama shows in his epic history of vulnerable humanity caught between the terror of contagion and the ingenuity of science, it has happened before.

Historia
In the aftermath of the Norman Invasion of 1066, William the Conqueror was uncompromising and brutal. English society was broken apart, its systems turned on their head. What is little known is that a fractured network of guerrilla fighters took up arms against the French occupiers.

generic autocracy
Revisado: 12-11-23
Welcome to Dystopia. Without context one dystopia is as good as another. Some, ANY, context would lend believability to the story. And Ireland!! For gods sake, anywhere but Ireland. Just doesn't ring true. Critics laud the absence of a back story claiming that this nasty autocratic, villainous government could apply to any nasty villainous government anywhere. That's the problem!
The writing is also marred by "overmetaphorization". If one metaphor is good then two or three is better. Every item is encrusted with frilly prose which is distracting and slows the pace of the narrative

Historia
Retired policeman Tom Kettle is enjoying the quiet of his new home, a lean-to annexed to a white Victorian Castle in Dalkey overlooking the sea. For months he has barely seen a soul, but his peace is interrupted when two former colleagues turn up at his door to ask questions about a decades-old case. A traumatic case which Tom never quite came to terms with. His peace is further disturbed by a young mother and family who move in next door, a woman on the run from her own troubles. And what of Tom’s family, his wife June, and their two children?

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

A great example of the curse of modern writers...too many words. Whatever story there is is suffocated, strangled, submerged, overwhelmed, inundated, clobbered senseless by redundant language. Know what I mean?

Historia
We'd like to introduce you to Elizabeth Finch. We invite you to take her course in Culture and Civilisation. Her ideas are not to everyone's taste. But she will change the way you see the world. Elizabeth Finch was a teacher, a thinker, an inspiration—always rigorous, always thoughtful. With careful empathy, she guided her students to develop meaningful ideas and to discover their centers of seriousness. As a former student unpacks her notebooks and remembers her uniquely inquisitive mind, her passion for reason resonates through the years.

PUZZLING
Revisado: 09-09-22
A most peculiar book! The enigmatic Ms Finch utters sophomoric aphorisms that her students deem to be "deep". Then a rambling, somewhat entertaining, discourse on monotheism vs paganism and the "apostate" Julian. Not quite sure what the other Julian had in mind when he wrote this book

Historia
In seventh-century Ireland, a scholar and priest called Artt has a dream telling him to leave the sinful world behind. Taking two monks—young Trian and old Cormac—he rows down the river Shannon in search of an isolated spot on which to found a monastery. Drifting out into the Atlantic, the three men find an impossibly steep, bare island inhabited by tens of thousands of birds, and claim it for God. In such a place, what will survival mean?

Historia
He was called the Hangman of the Gestapo, the "butcher of Prague", with a reputation as a ruthlessly efficient killer. He was the head of the SS, and the Gestapo, second-in-command to Heinrich Himmler. His orders set in motion the Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938 and, as the lead planner of Hitler's Final Solution, he chaired the Wannsee Conference, at which details of the murder of millions of Jews across Nazi-occupied Europe were toasted with cognac.

Evil explained....NOT!
Revisado: 06-23-22
If you are seeking a deep psychological insight into the mind of a monstrous psychopath you will not find it here. Heydrich's wife is vacuous and shallow and offers no clues to the mindset of the Butcher of Prague. The book only reinforces Arendt's observation on "the banality of evil"
