Ann Leary delivers again and her range of topic and voice is astounding. I wondered how she would approach this heavy topic.

It turns out to be a journey witnessed through the eyes of a young woman, smart and hardworking, whose had a challenging life and who finds herself with a new direction and the opportunity she has worked toward.

Ultimately, it’s a journey familiar to most of us - the battle to pursue what’s best for oneself or to do what’s best for many. It’s also a great reminder that people aren’t always what they seem. Intelligence isn’t necessarily attached to education. Nor vice versa.

To me, the best books are the ones where I learn something- and I learned a lot in this book. I’ve looked up so many things to expand my knowledge of women’s history even further.

The only thing that jarred me slightly was one of the characters sounded a lot like Marilyn Monroe (or at least the breathy version of her we tend to hear) - not a big deal at all. But, I have to wonder if others noticed.

Thanks Ann for another excellent book!

I love a curious ending- but, this was so well written that I expected it to be tied up with some sort of bow at the end.
It felt a little rushed. A good listen nonetheless!

I finally bought it. Listening to it for the third time in a year or so. It’s deep, funny at times, and holds a sad story as its foundation. It’s relatable to almost anyone. We’ve all felt awkward and misunderstood at times. It’s lovely to witness Eleanor’s journey.

The story was a tough one to witness. What a terrible way to live. But, when this way of growing up is all you know, it is more bearable than an outsider can imagine. You are just surviving. It is after the fact and once you have left it that you process the awfulness of the reality bit by bit as you can stand it. The book was a bit chopped up in places --- more a series of smaller stories and I sometimes lost the timeline. I would have loved to know more about her college experiences.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The stories reminded me of John Updike's writing. The book was just OK for me. I find as I get older, it's harder to find books I can relate to. This would have been relatable to my 30 year-old self. Now I am 53. I actually found this because I was seeking more books narrated by Emily Rankin...she's very good. But, there is another narrator on her - who I want to avoid. I think it's Julia Whelan.
