Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

I’ve never heard the original tale of Dracula. Just the Hollywood stuff. The book was (as you guessed-) much better!

Historia
The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of 75 fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from into a unique study of human civilization.

Wonderful! Entertaining , informative and thought provoking!
Revisado: 09-10-24
This book was such a surprise! Well written, well read and researched. As a art teacher and artist I am intimately involved with color and the broad spectrum (no pun intended) of what they can do. Once I heard the stories that surround the making and naming of each - individually- it was pure magic! What a task- and what research! And to make it so entertaining! I am always looking for stories to keep my Art History classes awake at 8am. I will definitely listen to each of these, oh so familiarly named colors again and again.Thank you!

Multi demential characters and a good romp through Victorian England!
Revisado: 07-26-24
Strong women characters with equally strong but baffled male characters are a running theme. There is lots of wonderful dry humor that is interwoven with the exotic elements and interests of the British Empire at its height. Like I said, its characters have interesting and varied back stories that leads to positive and resourceful sleuthing. The narrator is superb, taking the listener into all of the different characters individually in a flawless manner. Great series!

Sooo Interesting!
Revisado: 07-01-24
What a journey and what incredible research! Well written, interesting and nicely narrated. I am glad that I listened to it rather than reading it! (And I do have the book!)
To try to document and correlate the various cave art sites and trudge through past and present theories as to the images in the sites was an extraordinary undertaking. When presented here, the writer laid out all of the facts and theories about the art (esp. symbols) with a non prejudiced eye, asking us to think with her to a logical conclusion in interpretations. It was presented as an intimately personal exploration, as if we were listening to a storyteller telling of a personal adventure rather than a scientific discourse.
Of course we will never really know the answers to the questions proposed, but by cataloguing and cross referencing specific symbols she has created a more coherent understanding of the possible answer to “Why”. Her excitement was infectious.
As a former art professor, I loved the descriptions of making and creating with specific pigments, the possible symbolism of the colors and her reference to “the creative explosion”. The whole book was intriguing.
It will be interesting to find out where her passion and enthusiasm for interpreting the past will take her next. Great start!

Historia
Decades earlier Appius Tranquillus Surus wrote his will: it freed his slaves and bequeathed his businesses to them. He left an orchard to the Prisci, a family he was friendly with, on the condition that his freedmen could still take its harvest. The convoluted arrangement has led to a feud between the two families, each of which has its own internal strife. Endless claims and counterclaims lead to violence and even death. Lawyers have given up in exasperation as the case limps on. The original will has disappeared, along with a falsified codicil - and might there be another one?

Loved the genuine accent!
Revisado: 06-28-23
I really have enjoyed the very interesting dive into the world of antiques and murder. The main characters have fun with their rye dialogue and the stories are complicated enough to be interesting. I am sure that I have come across many of the characters in real life.
The best part has been the reader’s accent. It sounds like a true North Carolina and upper South Carolinian accent! Usually you get a southern drawl that drips and sounds exaggerated. Great narration, interesting story, great research!

I rarely write a review- but for this one I will. Great story- good twists and turns with excellent descriptions and character development. Very believable if you discount a few magical sprinklings- but then…they brought the story to life!
The reader was absolutely WONDERFUL! All of her voices and storytelling style really made the story come alive! I could listen to more of her narration in a minute!
Nice choice.
