In 1985, Charles Ng and Leonard Lake were spotted shoplifting. Ng escaped, but Lake's capture led police to a concrete bunker in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where they discovered the grisly evidence of an orgy of sex crimes, torture, and murder that claimed at least 16 victims. Lake committed suicide: Ng fled to Canada, where he was tracked down and extradited to California. This 14-year, $10 million legal case was the costliest and longest criminal prosecution in California history.

You CAN HAVE TOO MUCH DETAIL!

Oh come on. What is it with these authors who spend all of their time walking around like Columbo getting every single detail, no matter how unimportant and/or unentertaining. People like Violence, History, passion, or controversy. I dont care how many coats of paint are on a 1974 Skylark (Just an example.
I listen to books for entertainment. Cut your research short, wrap up this one and write another. ENTERTAIN ME!

I stand corrected! Beyond Cruel is Beyond Boring!

OK, I admit it. I like the narrator and I know the story (basically). When I read the terrible reviews I scoffed at them. As I started my listen, I figured I made the right choice. I listened, and listened. It turns out, they were right. There is way too much chowder here. Too much info about counterfeiting. Too much history of the friend, of the gardener, who once sat on a bus next to the subject of the story. Yikes. This author should be out solving crimes, not writing books. A ton of useless details. Chowder.
Btw, Chowder is an expression that came from one of my favorite books, The Long Haul by Finn Murphy. Have listened five times now! But as for this book...Beyond Cruel is Beyond Boring!

it was a good story not a great story.

The characters were interesting and they stayed interesting throughout the whole book much of the description of these characters ended up being a little unbelievable but that's what books are. They're supposed to be entertaining. I was disappointed at the end I'm not going to lie but there was a nice batch of violence and a lot of sex. if that's what you're looking for you'll find it . Truthfully it was too much. Not a bad listen the female character did a great job the male was just a little too much.

We all think that we have life working against. The truth of the matter is until you listen to a story like Stephen Callahan's you can't possibly imagine how challenging life can be. It this is one of my favorite audio books and it is written to make you feel as though you are in the raft right next to him.Happy sailing!
