Historia
Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it's the last safe haven. But at what price? Blade is known as the master of the rookeries - no one dares cross him. It's been said he faced down the Echelon's army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood craving he's been quicker, stronger, almost immortal. When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She's so...innocent. He doesn't see her backbone of steel - or that she could be the very salvation he's been seeking.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-03-25
Not as impressed with this one. The writing is well done- takes you right back into Victorian times- you can feel the setting and the narration for the most part added to the ambiance.
*********
However, the story and the characters leave a lot to be desired. No connection to any of the characters.
I agree that the narrator did not do a good job of portraying Blade. He didn't sound young and hot—more like old and raspy.
I got to chapter 14 and just couldn't finish. I couldn't get into the book, and the romancy sex stuff was nauseating.

I wish I had done more research on this one. I was fine with it until she began talking about reincarnation, which I don't agree with.

Inspired by a haunting true story...

It didn't capture me right at the beginning.
I don't know the true story, but I never found out what story it was.
I understand if you're going through a loss, but this was meant to be a haunted house story, not a script for a Lifetime movie. It could have been a thrilling scream fest if there had been as much focus on the haunting as on Rowan's father. It felt more like a mystery about missing a person than a ghost story. But it was so boring. And I think some of the dialogue is pedestrian.
I am tired of the same old 'no one believes the protagonist, and they are insane' bit.
Something random I caught was how often someone had to use the bathroom.
ღღღ´¯`*•.¸¸ღღღ´¯`*•.¸¸ღ
Narrator was too whispery for me. I mean, I get it if it had been a scary part. But not the whole thing. In particular, in a book featuring numerous male voices, they all seem to sound like the same person, perhaps a young one with various upper respiratory problems. I had to speed it up to get a decent performance. I really hate the way she does Garrett's voice; it sounds like a robot.

Charlaine Harris is a master at story telling. This second book is amazing. I love the characters and we get to see into Olivia's backstory in this one. The Manfred story was compelling. I think Mr. Snuggly is hilarious! 😂

It's not the first time Immortal Guardian Richart d'Alençon has saved a human life from eternal damnation. Usually, he moves on, a nameless savior like a ghost in the night. But this time he can't seem to forget the woman who rewarded him with a sensuous kiss after he rescued her from a trio of vampires. While Richart knows that loving a human can only bring trouble, the taste of forbidden lust is too great to resist.

Four bodies have been discovered along Europe’s riverbanks, placed with care—and completely drained of blood. Pinpricks on their throats indicate a slender murder weapon, but DNA found in the wounds suggests something far more sinister. Tasked with investigating, the FBI recruits Agents Della Hamilton and Mason Carter to Blackbird, an international offshoot of the Krewe of Hunters. If you want to catch a vampire killer, you need agents who can speak with the dead.

I've read over 30 in the Krewe of Hunter series. This one was different- I don't know if it's because it wasn't Luke Daniels narrating or it didn't follow the same "pattern" I'm used to for Graham's books.
It started out with a bang, then became monotonous as Della and Mason TALKED and TALKED about the case and previous cases. I almost turned it off. I kept going, hoping for the best- but there were quite a few monotonous gaps.
It needs more showing and less telling, IMO.
And there was a lot of head-hopping. One minute, we heard Della's thoughts, and then suddenly, we were in Mason's head.
I prefer her earlier books in the series.

Historia
When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

Way too long
Revisado: 04-27-23
Okay- first, as an adult, I had a really hard time with Twilight- Bella's inner monologue was mind-numbing at best. The overall plot was interesting, but I could barely make it through otherwise. That said, I can't say that Midnight Sun was any better in the beginning. I agree with other reviewers; the actual writing is so much better. Still, unfortunately, we have to deal with an inner dialogue that resembles Bella's- He must have said, 'I'm a monster' a zillion times. It took me a few days to get through this because Part One was so monotonous ( I admit I skimmed), with the exception of Ch 17 - Confessions.
However, once we got to Chapter 20 - Carlisle, it was clear sailing- I couldn't stop listening. The writing improved exponentially. I really liked being able to hear everyone in Edward's family, especially at the baseball game and when James, Victoria, and Laurant showed up. We get more action, and since we are able to get everyone's thoughts, it makes for a more interesting plotline.
If you can get past the first section, I believe you will have an enjoyable read.

Or does she? Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions in this standalone follow-up to My Lady Jane, which was called “an utter delight” (ALA Booklist, starred review), and “an uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
