Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Historia
The irreverent author of the cult classic Syrup hits his target in this satire on the wages of big capital. In Max Barry's hilarious vision of the near future, the world is run by giant American corporations, and employees take the last names of the companies they work for; The Police and The NRA are publicly traded security firms, and the U.S. government may only investigate crimes if they can bill a citizen directly.

Historia
On June 17, 1972, five well-dressed men carrying walkie talkies, cameras, and burglary tools were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington's Watergate Hotel. Allegations of high-level involvement in the crime led to President Nixon's resignation. In Nixon, Stephen Ambrose presents a balanced, unflinching portrait of one of America's most complex and puzzling chief executives.

Very boring - only for the hardcore history buffs
Revisado: 09-06-09
A factual account with many details regarding Nixon's rise and fall. The book is very long and tedious, and the reader is very monotonous. Otherwise it's ok.

Just Ok
Revisado: 09-06-09
A very light and superficial approach to the "Wal-Mart phenomenon". Gets into some of the history and mindset of this company, but avoids tough topics such as unfair competition, the encouragement of "economic cheaters" such as China (a country which cheats on environmental pollution, social obligations, intellectual property, etc.), and the addiction of American shoppers to "conspicuous consumption". A good introduction to Wal-Mart, but very light. Also, the sycophantic demeanor of the author does get boring after a while.

China today is visible everywhere: In the news, in the economic pressures battering America, in the workplace, and in every trip to the store. Provocative, timely, and essential, this dramatic account of China's growing dominance as an industrial super-power by journalist Ted C. Fishman explains how the profound shift in the global economic order has occurred, and why it already affects us all.

Interesting but very light
Revisado: 09-06-09
The book is ok. A little superficial and the reader does get boring after a while. Don't expect anything too insightful, though. Just basic general trends behind China's emergence as "America's factory". On the downside, the author is awed by all sorts of banal trends and doesn't make the effort (or doesn't have the intellectual capability) to do significant research and present much more meaningful explanations and conclusions. Light reading for the non-business / non-economist.

"This book is in part a detective story. After 9/11 I knew, if I needed further reinforcement, that we are living in a new world - the world of a global capitalist economy that is vastly more flexible, resilient, open, self-correcting, and fast-changing than it was even a quarter century earlier. It's a world that presents us with enormous new possibilities but also enormous new challenges. The Age of Turbulence is my attempt to understand the nature of this new world." (Alan Greenspan)

Total nonsense from a con-man
Revisado: 09-06-09
If you are wondering why most citizens in the U.S. and even worldwide are hurting, you need look no further than the author. This is the biggest bunch of nonsense I've ever heard. Talk about trying to rewrite history and cover your tracks; he may fool some people, but not me. Lots of con-men have done this in the past, though none as eloquently as this guy. He belongs right up there with the thieves from Enron, Worldcomm, etc. Don't waste your time with this gibberish.

POM Wonderful. FIJI Water. Teleflora. The Franklin Mint. Lynda Resnick's marketing triumphs read like an encyclopedia of branding. She is the smartest and hardest-working marketing brain in the business - the kind of marketer who can sell "ice sculptures to Eskimos." But her brilliant ideas aren't simply the result of random inspiration; they're the products of a systematic approach to marketing that any company -- large or small -- can adapt to achieve success.

Just ok
Revisado: 09-06-09
The book is ok. It's a somewhat interesting autobiographical work from a shameless self-promoter. What else would you expect from a marketer. There are no insights to be learned, but it can be entertaining for those who find the author or the subject matter (i.e. very superficial approaches to marketing) of interest. I probably would've found it interesting when I was in seventh grade...

Not his best, but entertaining
Revisado: 09-06-09
I really like this author and have listened to Ugly Americans (one of my favorites) and Busting Vegas (another favorite). This book is less complex and doesn't reach the depth of the two books mentioned above. Nevertheless, it is an entertaining book, very well read, and I recommend it.
