Relentlessly Honest, Inevitably Grim
Revisado: 09-19-24
This brutally detailed reflection on the writer's experience in the Soviet camp system provides valuable insights on how people behave when pressed to their limits by an autocratic system. It is worth investing the time to gain these insights, but be prepared. It will just feel at times like you spent more time on the story than you actually do. The slog will be worth it because this may be the best way for most of us to learn about the gulags. Solzhenitsyn has performed a great service for humanity by doing so.
As a casual reader -- from the comfy confines of early 21st century America -- I found it ponderous at times, even for Russian literature. The book cannot decide whether to be a journalistic account, a political critique, a collection of personal observations without a point, or an attempted history. To his credit Solzhenitsyn acknowledges this early in the telling, but this ambiguity in literary type makes the narrative an endless series of anecdotes with one point: the gulags were as barbaric as the system which created them. I have experienced enough in Volume 1 that I see no need to continue with Volumes 2 or 3, or to try One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

Timeless Lesson on Followership
Revisado: 09-02-18
A Message to Garcia reminds us that personal and professional success requires a commitment to action and excellence. When Hubbard urges the reader to take hold and "do the thing," Nike's "Just Do It!" campaign swooshed through my head.
The prose shows its age, as does its reference to the Spanish-American War, dinner pails, and offices filled with armies of clerks. Dont give up, dear reader. The anachronisms underscore1 the timelessness of the message, as does the grandfatherly voice of the narrator.
Conscientiousness. Independent action. An ethos of service. These are the characteristics that our bosses, investors, society wants: they all want the person who can be entrusted to carry a message to Garcia.
Along with the soft skills of leadership and self-improvement preached by current day writers, there is still room for embracing the harder realities of the professional world. There is still a need for more Rowans.
