Historia
Change is coming to Sweden’s far north: its untapped natural resources are sparking a gold rush with the criminal underworld leading the charge. But it’s not the prospect of riches that brings Lisbeth Salander to the small town of Gasskas. She has been named guardian to her niece Svala, whose mother has disappeared. Two things soon become clear: Svala is a remarkably gifted teenager—and she’s being watched.

Disappointed
Revisado: 09-15-24
Like other commenters, I agree that this author did not sufficiently know the character of Salander. Blumqvist felt very stiff and mundane, never really doing anything. Time jumps are always difficult but so much changed with his daughter that went unacknowledged, and then her story was never really resolved, at least not with her father. So much in this book was set up for success, but at the 3/4 mark I realized that the pacing was off. A good enough amount of set up but not enough resolution.
It would be one thing if this was the fourth book, but this far into the series there is a very prominent rhythm each book follows, and for good reason, that this book didn’t even come near to. Certain subtle changes were very obvious but not bothersome, though it seemed like the author was more interested in establishing her own characters than developing the originals.
Salander never watched movies, why would she know everything about Kill Bill Vol. 2? Little things like that, which felt off. The things Salander has gone through would never make one think that she would go see a therapists, especially a male one.
The villains weren’t fleshed out at all, you see near the end that the eagles nest had a whole network of people working there, were they all murdered for no reason? We aren’t told, nothing is wrapped up. Maybe too large a task for this author to handle. Salander used to be a badass, super cool and didn’t take shit from anyone, what happened to that?
Let down, but hopeful for a better follow-up.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

The allegory is endearing!
Revisado: 12-15-23
I thought this book would be more scary, and horror. It really isn’t, it’s more of an adventure story/coming of age tale, that’s pretty rated R. Then an 11 year old girl has 6 other 11 year olds run a train on her.
Other than that, cool book.

The full story adds so much more death than the film I grew up with! I never knew the book had but published serially either! I’ve only read a few of King’s books, but this one so far is my favorite!

Does time exist? What is infinity? Why do mirrors reverse left and right but not up and down? In this scintillating collection, Holt explores the human mind, the cosmos, and the thinkers who’ve tried to encompass the latter with the former. With his trademark clarity and humor, Holt probes the mysteries of quantum mechanics, the quest for the foundations of mathematics, and the nature of logic and truth. Along the way, he offers intimate biographical sketches of celebrated and neglected thinkers, from the physicist Emmy Noether to the computing pioneer Alan Turing and the discoverer of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot.

Revisado: 11-05-23
I really enjoyed this book! I haven’t attended any college but consider myself pretty well read a scattering of different fields, and this book exactly appealed to THAT! A bunch of different people and subjects, anecdotes and stories that all loosely curtailed into one another, super entertaining and thought provoking! Bought the hard copy before I was even done listening!

Historia
From the outside, Harold is an average seven-year-old third grader growing up in the 1960s. Bored by school. Crushing on a girl. Likes movies and baseball—especially the hometown Boston Red Sox. Enjoys spending time with his grandfather. But inside Harold’s mind, things are a lot more complex and unusual. His thoughts come to him as birds flying through a small rectangle in the middle of his brain. He visits an outdoor cafe on the moon and is invited aboard a spaceship by famed astronomer Carl Sagan.

Amazing! Bukowski-esque!
Revisado: 10-30-23
Loved this book! The thoughts are hilarious and thought provoking, and there are so many titillating factoid nuggets, like how random things came to be or random people who died, and how they died. It’s a plethora of little elements, and classic stand-up “callbacks” laced throughout that made me really enjoy this book.
Harold’s thoughts and nonsensical meanderings are EXACTLY what it’s like to be a young boy, and Wright adds humor and emotion to a simple scene, that we’ve all experienced. Sitting in class all day, escaping the monotony and wandering into our weird brains until “after 13.8 billion years and the 3 o’clock bell, the school day ended.”

Historia
This quintessential coming-of-age novel describes the early life of Stephen Dedalus. It is set in Ireland during the 19th century, which was a time of emerging Irish nationalism and conservative Catholicism. Highly autobiographical in nature, the work is also notable for its being the first one in which Joyce uses innovative “stream of consciousness” writing style. A Portrait... follows Stephen Dedalus from his babyhood into early adulthood.

I felt the book was very thought provoking;
I appreciated the questions it brings one to ask about themself, their beliefs and what we all desire in life.
Parts were hard to follow, though I imagine that was due more to the audiobook and not being able to see paragraph brakes

Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. Historia
Written seven years before The Town and the City officially launched his writing career, The Sea Is My Brother marks the pivotal point at which Kerouac began laying the foundations for his pioneering method and signature style. The novel chronicles the misadventures of two seamen who at first seem different but are really two sides of the same coin: 27-year-old Wesley Martin, who “loved the sea with a strange, lonely love,” and William Everhart, an assistant professor of English at Columbia College.

Humble beginnings for Kerouac
Revisado: 04-17-23
I consider Kerouac to be my favorite author due to the works of On The Road and Dharma bums alone. Coming from that end of his works, I’ve progressed back to his beginnings here with this book and it shocked me! This book is so SOBER, and anyone who loves Kerouac knows that SOBER is entirely different from his later works, or really his life at all.
I loved this book, I loved Kerouac’s prose, direct story telling.

Historia
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.
