Women in the Vietnam War
Revisado: 09-05-24
This book and the stories of the nurses in Vietnam touched me deeply. The action was visceral and the emotional conflicts cut deeper than I expected. I cried frequently throughout the story and I’m grateful to the author for filling in an area of knowledge about that conflict I hadn’t realized I was lacking. Hold on to your seats - this is raw and painful!

Loved this book!
Revisado: 07-22-23
I confess, I had some skepticism when I started this book, but as chapter after chapter unfolded, I soon found myself hooked! The story is very turny-twisty and fun as well as filled with the good, the bad, and the ugly. The narrator absolutely nailed the characters and helped to keep things moving along at a frantic pace! I highly recommend it!

Historia
"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

Narrator Mismatch!
Revisado: 04-12-23
I bought this book because the movie The Keep has long been a favorite of mine, and since I've always found books to be better than the movies made from them, I thought I would see how the book measured up against the movie. Story-wise, the book has followed the movie quite closely (I'm about half through it so far. Unfortunately, whoever decided to use Ralph Lister to narrate the book missed the mark badly. The narrator's heavy English accent doesn't work at all with the story, which is based in Romania, during WWII, and involving German officers and soldiers and Romanian citizens. The constant English accented dialogue throughout the entire book was annoying and distracting from an otherwise good story.

Historia
The Syrian plane disintegrated, evaporating in a gush of silvery smoke, rent through with bright white lightning, and the ejecting pilot's body was blown clear of the fuselage. For an instant it was outlined ahead of David's screen, cruciform in shape with arms and legs thrown wide, the helmet still on the head, and the clothing ballooning in the rush of air.

I have read many of Wilbur Smith’s books and I’ve loved them all! His characters are larger than life and his action sequences are breathtaking in their stark realism and imagery!

Remarkable!
Revisado: 08-19-22
As a child growing up in the south during the 1950s, I was aware of the different treatment of blacks by the whites in my hometown, but I never thought to question, “Why?” This novel lays bare the plight of poor blacks of that era and their desperate struggles for survival. The story, the characters and the narrator combine to create a gripping, heart wrenching tale. It’s unfortunate that the sequel was never completed, there was much of the saga begging to be told.

This anthology was a highly enjoyable and engrossing set! The characters grew to be quite real to me and the whole storyline is steeped in traditions of the country’s oldest military force, the Marines! Ohh Rah!

Historia
From executive producers of The Walking Dead and Travis Beacham, the writer of Pacific Rim, comes a heart-stopping Audible Original featuring a brilliant British cast. It’s the near future and seven years since a comet hit the earth and blotted out the sun. The world is a dark, frozen landscape. And then, beastly creatures emerge and take over. A story of apocalypse, horror, and adventure, Impact Winter is a wholly original new saga created just for Audible with immersive 3D audio that dares you to pop in your earbuds and listen in the dark.

Unable to Finish
Revisado: 02-21-22
I had high expectations for this audiobook, based on the description of the story, the cover art, and what I now consider to be highly questionable ratings. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it through the entire performance, in large part due to the excessive use of reverberation in the dialogue, and the heavy use of background sound effects. I fall into a category of audiobook listeners who is a senior adult with hearing aids. There are millions of us all over the world! For many of us in this category of listeners, the reverberation and background sound effects during the narrations by the actors results in much of the story, and the anticipated enjoyment of the book to be lost. Maybe Audible should consider affixing a "caution" for offerings such as this, that the book "May be challenging for those who rely on hearing aids."

"Too much Blah, Blah, Blah"
Revisado: 02-15-22
Of all the Timothy Zaharia Star Wars books I’ve listened to, I don’t remember any being so long on politics and long discussions and so little action sequences. There was also not a moment when there was no background noise of one kind or another and way too much reverb on transmitted conversations. I would not buy this book again.

I tried but just couldn’t make it
Revisado: 11-22-21
I heard in a newspaper review that this was an excellent book. For some reason known only to her, the author tried to do her own narration. She killed any hope I had of listening to the whole book. She only reads 3 to 5 words in a single breath, which makes her reading hesitant and choppy, with very little inflection or feeling. Her delivery was so distracting that I had to throw in the towel and give it up.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Loved This Book!
Revisado: 04-02-21
When I saw someone else's rating of "Forrest Gump during the apocalypse" I was a little hesitant to give it a try, but on a hunch I bought it. Twenty-five hours later I find that I kind of wish the story had continued, but there's also such a thing as too much of a good thing, so perhaps the ending is satisfying enough. There was a LOT more action and human drama in it than I'd expected, and I loved the collection of characters that were gradually pulled into Billy's orbit. I felt that the book had a little bit of everything in it. I'd LOVE to see a movie made from it!
