Historia
Berlin, 1930—When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’s academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor. Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the social views growing popular in Hitler’s Germany, Jürgen’s position with its burgeoning rocket program changes their diminishing fortunes for the better. But as Sofie watches helplessly, her beloved Berlin begins to transform, forcing her to consider what they must sacrifice morally for their young family’s security, and what the price for their neutrality will be.

I have conflicting feelings…
Revisado: 09-21-23
I loved Sophie. Loved everything about her story. I hated Lizzie. She used Cal to get a better life, used his money with no reservation. She used him to make her life comfortable and the life of her worthless brother. Then in the end, she still takes his money for her own personal gain. She was absolutely useless to the story and I hated her chapters. If the book had just been about the Rhodes family, I would’ve rated it higher. Lizzie disgusted me and ruined the book for me.

Too cliche.
Revisado: 06-21-23
This was such a cliche book. Every situation ended in a predictable way. I just didn’t enjoy it and at times I felt the story didn’t flow well. Just my opinion. Narrator was great though!

Very emotional, raw story.
Revisado: 05-08-23
I really ended up loving this book. It’s a sad reality what people went through in WWII but it’s worth knowing as much as we can. The story was really beautiful and it didn’t have that cliche kind of ending. Not everyone that lived had a happy ending and this book reflected reality. Someone commented on the British narrator but I loved her. I can’t stand American narrators, we have obnoxious accents. 😂 Very beautiful book!

Not my favorite WWII novel
Revisado: 05-02-23
I found this book too predictable. Parts were left unfinished and story lines hanging. It was all too cliche for me. Performance was great though.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

So slow....
Revisado: 10-02-18
This book was so slow and hard to follow at first. Once I got into the story, I was expecting this exciting adventure to free the Jinni and give some kind of fulfilling life to the Golem. However the ending was anticlimactic and boring; like most of the book. The narration was good, though I wish each of the characters all had a more distinct voice. The idea of the overall story is great, but it wasn’t executed well. It fell flat for me.

Historia
An epic novel exposing the ugliness of war and the beauty of hope. The city of Kiev was bombed in Hitler's blitzkrieg across the Soviet Union, but the constant siege was only the beginning for her citizens. In this sweeping historical saga, Kelli Stuart takes the listener on a captivating journey into the little-known history of Ukraine's tragedies through the eyes of four compelling characters who experience the same story from different perspectives.

Good story but the narrator took getting used to....
Revisado: 09-27-18
It took me so long to get used to the narrators voice on this one. At times it’s so gratingly annoying, I couldn’t stand it. Once I got used to her voice, it was fine. Story was good as well.

Not quite what I expected.
Revisado: 04-26-17
I liked this book and loved the narrator. The story started out interesting and held me captive straight away. Where it started to fall for me was after Rosa got to England. I felt as though it dramatically slowed and I had a hard time listening for long periods of time. Time in this book went very quickly, and though I gather Rosa is a strong character, I felt disconnected from her. Since time went so quickly and in that day and age it may have been more improper to say what you think, I didn't get a sense of what she truly felt. Her feelings which would have been the most integral tie to bind my heart to her, were missing. I just felt a strong lack of feeling from Rosa and knowing what the Jews went through during WWII, I can't imagine the emotional strain one would have felt.... yet it seemed as though Rosa almost felt nothing at times. She was always so proper. Even to the point where she didn't or wouldn't confront a terrible wrong done to her. It was a good book. Just not what I expected. I would've liked to know Rosa better. I would've liked to know what her family was experiencing at the same time. I gave it 3 stars but it's more like 2.5 for me.
