Not what I was expecting

I was excited about listening to this. I was hoping for some stories and insights linked to Rubin's own experience with all the legends he has worked with. His skirting of this apart from in the most generic terms is very frustrating.
This is a string of familiar aphorisms about creativity interspersed with a few well-worn, second-hand examples. I managed to get through it, but only just.
On the plus side, Rick Rubin has a relaxing voice.

Shocking and sad how prescient these books were/are.

A wasted opportunity

This book is a celebrated document of the evolution of China at the end of the 20th Century. The vignettes and connected stories area entertaining and insightful. I got to the end, just. It was a very painful experience to listen to. Not the story - but the narration.
What possessed the producers to find someone to narrate the book who has so little interest that they stumble over common Chinese names like Hu JinTao or even Mao? How hard would it be to find someone to help with pronunciation? Readers of this book are likely to have at least a passing interest in China, why insult this audience with a borderline offensive narration. When he launched into 'characterisations' of various people oh dear - this is really dodgy territory. I can only imagine how embarrassed Peter Hessler is by this.

Mining the Tortoises of your Mind

Fabulous insight into Jarvis’ world.
Highly resonant to anyone growing up in that era. Great use of audiobook potential to add foley-style effects and other enhancements (why is this so rare in other audiobooks?) Cliffhanger for a part two? let’s hope so!

Zen and the Art of Mechanical Tinkering

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I didn't know about the Wheeler Dealers show but this popped up in my recommendation list and thought I would give it a go after listening to the sample. As a fellow nerd, I really enjoyed the sometimes lengthy segments about problem solving mechanical or concept issues. Have started looking at Edd's YouTube channel as a result and look forward to seeing many future projects.

This book is well-written and read, but I just couldn't get on board with the story. Maybe I will come back to it. Interested to read others' reviews as maybe I am approaching it in the wrong way.

Groovy word play from avuncular druid Alan Watts

Groovy word play from avuncular druid Alan Watts. Yeah, baby, yeah! The recordings are old. Some seem to have people in the background eating crisps, but others i think were recorded outdoors so you can hear birdsong, bullfrogs and rain. Well worth the listen. And probably a re-listen.
