Best Listen of '25
Revisado: 04-25-25
Part true-crime. Part Real Housewives drama. Ronan does a great job investigating this fascinating woman and her life in Arizona. I won't give away any of the details but this story is both crazy and fun to listen to. By far the best listen so far this year...like any good Housewives franchise...I hope there is a Season 2.

Gotta Love Kelly
Revisado: 04-25-25
Was this book fun...yes. Was it long-winded...yep. But I cannot fault Kelly...she says so in the title. I enjoyed this book but it did take me longer than normal to get through as it can be a bit long. I prefer shorter chapters that I can listen to on my drive in...but Kelly fills her stories with fun footnotes and an occasional cameo from her hubby, Marc. If you are fan...listen to this book!

Revisado: 04-25-25
Tim writes and narrates a great book about his time in Hollywood and his various reinventions. From Gunsmoke to Animal House to time as a successful television director...Tim walks through these moments with candor and fun. You can hear how Tim grows up as each year passes, he becomes a husband and father of three, and the opportunities that come to him. Tim is a great narrator and this book sheds light on his 60 years in Hollywood.

Historia
In Pure Innocent Fun, Madison explores the key cultural moments that inspired his career as a critic and guided his coming of age as a Black gay man in Milwaukee. In this hilarious, full-throttle trip through the ’90s and 2000s, he recounts learning about sex from Buffy the Vampire Slayer; facing the most heartbreaking election of his youth (not George W. Bush’s win, but Jennifer Hudson losing American Idol); and how never getting his driver’s license in high school made him just like Cher Horowitz in Clueless: “a virgin who can’t drive.”

Historia
Christmas 1975 and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is riding high in the charts. In a residential street just outside Cardiff a loud knocking breaks the stillness of the evening. When Rob Parsons, a young lawyer, opens his door, he finds a homeless man standing before him, clutching a bag of belongings and a frozen chicken. A Knock at the Door is the true story of this homeless man who entered the home of a young couple, became a dustman and lived as part of their family for over forty-five years until his death.

I loved this listen. Rob Parsons wrote and narrates this wonderful book about a simple act of kindness. Rob and his family welcome in a homeless man who changes their lives. Rarely does a book make me tear up but this one pulled at my heart strings. This was a great story that I will re-listen to again and again.

Bruce Vilanch is known as a go-to comedy writer for award shows, sitcoms, and top-heavy variety specials, but he has also been responsible for quite a few of the worst shows ever put on television—legendarily bad productions. It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time is a lifetime reflection of what Vilanch has experienced, learned, forgotten, dismissed, and embraced in decades of working in show business

If you have ever wondered..."who thought of such a thing?"...this book is for you. Bruce takes us through the craziest things on television and film. The Brady Bunch Comedy Hour...classic camp. The Star Wars Holiday Special...so out there it's hard to forget. I enjoyed this listen as Bruce describes inspiration, key players and good, old-fashioned gossip.

Burt is a legend...and it is no surprise that his life story is filled with incredible people and events. A great book about his upbringing and eventual rise in the music industry. He talk open and honestly about his partnership with Hal David, his marriage to Angie Dickinson and his relationship with his daughter. I loved hearing about his working relationship with Dionne Warwick. Burt is no angel...and he openly admits it but he takes us through his journey to self-discovery.

Beautiful. Willful. Charming. Blunt. Grace Coddington’s extraordinary talent and fierce dedication to her work as creative director of Vogue have made her an international icon. Known through much of her career only to those behind the scenes, she might have remained fashion’s best-kept secret were it not for The September Issue, the acclaimed 2009 documentary that turned publicity-averse Grace into a sudden, reluctant celebrity. Grace’s palpable engagement with her work brought a rare insight into the passion that produces many of the magazine’s most memorable shoots.

How can you NOT like Grace Coddington? Like many, I fell in love with her after seeing The September Issue. What I loved about this book was her candor, honesty and no-nonsense talk about the fashion world. She is the hardest working woman in fashion and she takes us through her start as a model, her transition to behind the scenes, and her eventual arrival at American Vogue. This was a fascinating listen and I loved her narration. If you enjoy fashion biographies...this is a must.

Stephanie starred on Broadway in The Cher Show for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.

Cher does it again...
Revisado: 01-11-25
What a fantastic story...and it's only Part One. Cher takes us back to her childhood with her often interesting relationship with her mother. The book really kicks into high gear when Cher meets her future husband, Sonny. Cher gives us a front row seat to her relationship with Sonny, their business woes, and ultimately, the decision for her to create her own story. My only comment beyond how great this book is...was the change in narrators after a few minutes. I cannot wait for Part Two!

A song definitely worth listening to...
Revisado: 12-27-24
Although Carole Bayer Sager has existed in my pop culture universe since I was old enough to remember...I knew little about this talented lady. This book was one of favorite listens this year. She pulls no punches and talks candidly about her life including her complicated relationship with her mother, her marriage to Burt Bacharach and her journey to self discovery. All this while she collaborated with incredible talents to write some of the best music of our lifetime. I highly recommend this book.
